Andrew's Brain: A Novel, by E.L. Doctorow

NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH, SLATE, AND THE TELEGRAPH

This brilliant novel by the author of Ragtime, The Book of Daniel, Billy Bathgate, and The March takes us on a radical trip into the mind of a man who, more than once, has been the inadvertent agent of disaster. Speaking from an unknown place and to an unknown interlocutor, Andrew is thinking, Andrew is talking, Andrew is telling the story of his life, his loves, and the tragedies that have led him to this place and point in time. As he peels back the layers of his strange story, we are led to question what we know about truth and memory, brain and mind, personality and fate, about one another and ourselves. Probing, mischievous, and profound, Andrew’s Brain is a singular achievement in the canon of an American master.

Amazon.com Review
An Amazon Best Book of the Month, January 2014: From the start of this magnificent novel, we’re told that “Andrew” has done bad things. “I am numb to my guilt … incapable of punishing myself,” he tells the unnamed man he calls “Doc.” The things we don’t know about these two men are numerous. Where is Andrew? Who’s he speaking with? A shrink? A cop? And why? It gives nothing away to state that the unraveling of those and other questions is what makes this such a strange and compelling page turner. Via the tense Godot-like conversation/interrogation, we’re slowly exposed to Andrew’s life. Or at least a version of it. “You don’t know everything about me, Doc, you’re only hearing what I choose to tell you,” Andrew says. And later: “We’re all Pretenders.” We learn Andrew gave up his daughter to an ex-wife after his second wife died on 9/11--an event that echoes menacingly throughout this wise, witty, and unnerving examination of truth and memory. The conversation between two people who clearly know each other well, but distrust each another more, keeps us on shifting ground throughout. We eventually learn of Andrew’s murky role in the basement of a post-9/11 White House, and his run-in with characters named Chaingang and Rumbum. “Jesus, I don’t know why I talk to you,” Andrew huffs more than once. Not until the final page do we discover, he must. --Neal Thompson

From Booklist
*Starred Review* A man is talking about a friend, a cognitive scientist named Andrew, but it doesn’t take long for the person listening to him, possibly a psychoanalyst, to ask if he, in fact, is Andrew. He says he is. Furthermore, he reports that he’s numb to all emotions and that he hears voices. Worse yet, he’s been living under some sort of cosmic curse, unintentionally precipitating catastrophes right and left while he walks through the flames unscathed. There is much that is eerie and odd about Andrew’s exchanges with an unidentified, mostly silent interlocutor, and the stories he tells induce us to question his veracity and sanity. Did he cause a fatal car crash? An infant’s quiet death? A woman’s disappearance on 9/11? Did he drink cocktails with midgets? Hang out with the president during their Yale days? In stunning command of every aspect of this taut, unnerving, riddling tale, virtuoso Doctorow confronts the persistent mysteries of the mind—trauma and memory, denial and culpability—as he brings us back to one deeply scarring time of shock and lies, war and crime. Writing in concert with Twain, Poe, and Kafka, Doctorow distills his mastery of language, droll humor, well-primed imagination, and political outrage into an exquisitely disturbing, morally complex, tragic, yet darkly funny novel of the collective American unconscious and human nature in all its perplexing contrariness. --Donna Seaman

“Mind-bending . . . a fascinating and perplexing examination of a human being, invented by Doctorow but very real, who has suffered great trauma and desperately needs to believe he is not a monster.”—St. Louis Post-Dispatch

“Absorbing . . . In Doctorow’s capable hands, Andrew is revealed to be a unique and sympathetic character—you’re just never sure whether he’s a redeemed lout or criminally insane. . . . Besides the wonderful prose, the book has humor and warmth and entertaining twists of plot.”—Houston Chronicle

“This is a brief book and, like many of the author’s recent offerings, a seemingly simple pleasure. But Doctorow cannot do anything simply, and he can’t help but write well. His lines in passing are the sort that other writers might work for years to perfect. And his insights, beautifully embedded in an irresistible story, are worthy of the best sort of big book.”—Minneapolis Star Tribune

“[Doctorow] locates and amplifies the human emotions that lend poignancy to particular moments in individual lives. . . . He illuminates these concepts by taking us inside the mind of a fully formed figure—a man whose pain, fear, desire and suffering we come to know and identify with. The journey from this novel’s unsettling, parabolical beginning to its ambiguous end is frequently disorienting, but it’s worth the trip.”—Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

“In stunning command of every aspect of this taut, unnerving, riddling tale, virtuoso Doctorow confronts the persistent mysteries of the mind—trauma and memory, denial and culpability—as he brings us back to one deeply scarring time of shock and lies, war and crime. Word will travel quickly about this intense and provocative novel by best-selling literary giant Doctorow.”—Booklist (starred review)

“Through this dialectic narrative, Doctorow connects to the common theme seen throughout his work: one’s history is often a battle between memory and self-struggle to maintain an image of morality and adequacy. Doctorow deftly captures the complex but beautiful vagaries of life in clean, simple language.”—Library Journal (starred review)

Praise for E. L. Doctorow

“On every level, [Doctorow’s] work is powerful. . . . His sensitivity to language is perfectly balanced, and complemented by a gigantic vision.”—Jennifer Egan

“E. L. Doctorow is a national treasure, and I mean this in a very specific sense: He has rewarded us, these forty-five years, with a vision of ourselves, as a people, a vision possessed of what I might call ‘aspirational verve’—he sees us clearly and tenderly, just as we are, but also sees past that—to what we might, at our best, become.”—George Saunders

“[His great topic is] the reach of American possibility, in which plain lives take on the cadences of history. . . . Doctorow’s prose tends to create its own landscape, and to become a force that works in opposition to the power of social reality.”—Don DeLillo

“A writer of dazzling gifts and boundless imaginative energy.”—Joyce Carol Oates, The New Yorker

“One of our greatest living writers . . . a virtuosic storyteller with enormous range.”—People

“Doctorow is a magician. . . . His prose is dazzling.”—Vogue

Two and one half stars
By Dr. J. J. Kregarman
E.L. Doctorow, in my opinion, is one of the greatest living American novelists. Everything of his I have read until starting on Andrew's Brain, I have enjoyed and admired. While admiring parts of this opus as witty and momentarily brilliant, I neither enjoyed it or considered it, as a whole, to be ranked among his best works. Really, it's a bit of a muchness to have to read almost half of a novel to begin to get involved! Were this not a book by E.L. Doctorow, I would have abandoned it well before that point. As a vine club member, and in respect to this author I needed to push on to the end. If you are a fan of the author, you'll read this book, no matter what I write. If you are new to him look elsewhere for your first experience reading him!

"Cold hearted orb that rules the night, Removes the colours from our sight.
By Lonya
Red is grey and yellow white. But we decide which is right. And which is an illusion? "

In his book The joys of Yiddish, Leo Rosten describes the difference between a schlemiel and a schlimazel. Both types of people suffer from chronic bad luck of one sort or another. The difference is that while the schlemiel is the type of person that trips while carrying a tray of soup in the cafeteria, the schlimazel is the person it lands on. In E.L. Doctorow's compelling new novel, Andrew's Brain, the protagonist Andrew is the schlemiel whilst all those closest to him end up being schlimazels.

Although not technically a mystery this book is one which can easily be spoiled by too full a description of the narrative. So I will start with some broad brush strokes and leave the rest to be discovered by the reader.

Andrew is talented and smart; he is a cognitive scientist with multiple degrees. His life, if his interior monologue is to be believed, has been dogged by a series of unfortunate events. Those events have left him physically unharmed. The physical harm involved has always struck those closest to him. The story is told mostly through the voice of Andrew's interior monologue and in snippets of conversation with another person, perhaps a psychiatrist or some other person tasked with getting Andrew's story told.

But the lack of physical harm is no indicator that Andrew has not been damaged and it appeared clear to me from the start that Andrew's monologue was really getting to the edges of his role in these events. Doctorow paints around those edges and it appeared to me that the reader is left to cut through those edges and find some way to burrow between the lines and dig deeper into Andrew's brain.
Andrew's Brain is one of those books that had me puzzled from the start. After the story ended I was still puzzled in many respects but it was a puzzlement that left me thinking about the story and its meaning well after I finished reading it.

I had a visceral reaction to the story. Unsettled as I may have been at not having Andrew's deeper thoughts explained to me it left me no alternative but to personalize the events and substitute my brain for Andrew's. What would I have thought, how would I have reacted, how would I attribute fault, if fault there was, for the events that transpired around me. Would I blame myself? Did my thoughts presage or facilitate these events? Lastly, and this is the key question the book posed for me: would I have stayed sane and would my own `interior monologue' represent a memory of actual events or would it represent some parallel universe of my own creation designed solely to protect me from some paralyzing pain induced by these events. Would I be cognitive enough to know the difference?

As noted above, it is hard to discuss this book adequately without laying out critical spoilers. And that for me is an indication of the power of the book. It is a book that is enriched by discussing it afterwards. I do not belong to any book clubs but this seems to me to be a book club's dream, one that would create a rich discussion in which it is likely that every member will have a different vision of what it said and what it meant to them.

I very much enjoyed Andrew's Brain. It is a book I continue to think about and for this reason alone I have no hesitation in recommending it to anyone willing to put their brain in Andrew's place, look at a life filled with sadness, and reflect upon how their own brain would hold up to the stress.

Interesting new Doctorow!
By brjoro
I would call myself a casual E.L. Doctorow reader. I've read all his classics, and a smattering of his other works. Probably 8-10 total. So I'm far from an expert. I can say that this is pretty unique from other Doctorow titles I've read, it's a different approach for him. 'Andrew's Brain' is certainly an interesting read, it's only 200 pages and I finished it on a DC-NYC Amtrak train up and back. It flows well, but it's not necessarily an 'easy read.' The narrative is not all that compelling, it's a man (Andrew) telling his analyst about his life, his marriages, etc. But the writing is fantastic, the prose is great, and the plot twists take the story in some interesting directions. As a fan of good fiction I highly recommend this.

Women Writers of the Middle Ages: A Critical Study of Texts from Perpetua to Marguerite Porete, by Peter Dronke

This book gives a detailed picture of the contributions made by women writers to Western literature from the third century to the thirteenth. Many of the texts Peter Dronke presents and interprets have hitherto remained unknown, or virtually inaccessible; some have never been edited or translated before. The emphasis throughout is on personal testimonies, and on texts that have notable literary or intellectual interest. Thus the book affords many new insights into medieval literature, not only into the writings of renowned women such as Hrotsvitha or Heloise, but also into those of a number of neglected writers who are exceptional in their gifts and individuality. Already highly influential, Women Writers of the Middle Ages continues to be essential reading for specialists and students alike in medieval literature, medieval intellectual history, and women's studies.

Review
'Women Writers of the Middle Ages compels us to re-examine our fundamental assumptions about medieval literature; it forces us to reconsider what constitutes good or even great literature and on what tenets literary canonization operates.' English Language Studies

'This must be one of the best books on women's writing. Mr Dronke is like the Chaucer who took such pains, in his Legend of Good Women, to write in the service of women, literature, elegance and wit.' The Times Literary Supplement

A Wonderful Resource
By A Customer
I checked this book out to use as a resource for a paper I was doing on St. Perpetua. I ended up reading more from the other chapters than the one I was supposed to be studying. This book has a wealth of information about many notable Medieval women. The chapter on Hildegard von Bingen and Marguerite Porete are of especial interest. There are also original Latin and French texts included for those who enjoy using primary sources.

University Physics, Volume 1 (with InfoTrac), by Ronald Lane Reese

Reese writes a text that embraces the spirit of many reform goals, such as better integration of modern physics topics, a stronger emphasis on conceptual understanding, and an attention to different learning styles. Most importantly, however, Reese writes for students to allow them not only to learn the tools that physics provides, but also to see why those tools work and the beauty of the ideas that underlie them. Because students sometimes fail to see how the topics of physics connect to each other or to the world outside the classroom, Reese introduces each new topic by describing how it relates to experiences and phenomena with which the student is already familiar or to topics previously discussed. Reese emphasizes introductory physics, rather than encyclopedic physics, leaving appropriate topics for more advanced courses. His thinking is that it is better to build technical knowledge on a firm foundation of fundamental principles rather than on a large collection of mere formulas. In doing this, he helps students develop a thorough understanding of the principles of basic areas of physics: kinematics, dynamics, waves, thermodynamics, electromagnetism, optics, relativity, and modern physics. Because most students cannot discern simplifying patterns and connections when faced with seemingly complex ideas, students learn physics through practice. To assist them, Reese integrates the most significant material from previous chapters into new material; provides an accurate conceptual understanding of fundamental physical principles by placing great emphasis on these principles and how they arose; points out the limits of applicability of the theories and equations of physics; and stresses connections among topics by incorporating many aspects of contemporary physics and astronomy into a mix of traditional topics.

An excellent book for Physics Majors
By Kieran Mullen
This is my absolute favorite introductory Physics textbook. It gives historical background, literary quotes and discussions of underlying philosophy. It uses calculus and real vector notation from the outset. Many other textbooks introduce vector notation, but don't really use it to solve problems). This book is unapologetic in its use of reasonably sophisticated mathematics. Finally, it's just a joy to read. I've been doing physics for thirty years and I learned a few things from it.

However, this is not a book based on the latest pedagogical trend. It is a book for students who will pursue physics, and as such it gives an excellent grounding in the topic. I would not use it for a course aimed at engineers, since it goes well beyond simple problem solving skills and endeavors to actually teach students to think like a physicist.

The problems are original and entertaining. Each chapter ends with a superb set of references for further reading and suggested experiments.

The latest Halliday and Resnick, Serway, or Young and Freedman are (in my opinion) ugly books with short, choppy sections that water down the material. Reese's book is for more interesting and even inspiring. I find these qualities essential in teaching Physics majors.

A great book overall!
By Liz Cody
Product: 5 stars - great book
Seller: 5 stars - no problems, quick service, good condition

A review of the textbook:
As other reviews have noted, this book is excellent for the self-motivated learner who wants the subject to be taught thoroughly. The authors have made sure to explain their notation and mathematics so that the reader learns to solve physics from the identification and derivation of basic principles, not just the application of memorized formulas.

Many years ago, I took high school physics and two semesters of rigorous introductory physics for engineers and a(n) (un)healthy dose of calculus and linear algebra which may have made me more comfortable with the concepts in this book, but I was able to re-learn from this book without ever opening up a math book or even wikipedia. I think a self-learner who doesn't have that math background would still do just fine with this book (especially if they had a basic calculus book) as the authors are very explicit about showing their work and identifying the methods they use.

Pros:
Teaches necessary problem solving skills and not just formulas to memorize
The mathematical methods, concepts and notations are thoroughly explained, and the sample problems feature clear, step-by-step demonstrations of the mathematical approach
Shows multiple ways of solving problems and uses many examples to highlight how probem solving techniques can be modified to accomodate different scenarios
Highlights connections between different concepts (ie kinematics, newtonian mechanics, work-energy theory, impulse and momentum) and highlight their strengths and limitations
Provides numerous practice problems for each chapter, and a concise chapter summary
Provides historical dimension of the discipline and the larger framework/questions
Has lots of pictures and diagrams that are generally well-constructed to facilitate visual learning

Cons:
There are some minor formatting issues (words cut off) and images are 'cheesy'
Older layout lacks the user-friendly layout features found in more modern textbooks (e.g. a glossary, chapter content maps, sidebars, concept diagrams etc)
There are answers (not solutions) provided to only every other odd numbered question in the back of the book, and a "solutions manual" (SOLD SEPARATELY) only show the detailed solutions to these same problems. So 3/4 of the problems don't have answers or detailed solutions available.

Note that Volume 1 only covers chapters 1-15 (Kinematics-Thermodynamics) and the rest of the material for an introductory physics course is in volume 2. I have no idea if the infotrac works as I haven't tried to use it.

The Awesome Choices You Need To Make
By Reverend Mike Wanner
The Little Book of Karma is a great reminder of all that you know consciously and all that you have supressed subconsciously.
It highlights the fact that we have choice in all things but only when we remember to choose. If we don't choose then by default we have chosen to not optimize every situation and opportunity. Choosing or not both have consequences for our lives and opportunities.
This book brought to my attention many things that i needed to revisit. I recommend it without reservations of any kind.

clear and concise
By barbaros ozdogan
In clear and concise writing Reiss presents a framework for understanding the concepts of project management. First he introduces you to the jargon and then goes though nine steps you need to reach a successful project. He addresses critical path concerns, and resource allocation. His section on criteria for choosing computer software was informative, but the scope of the programs he discusses is far beyond the needs of a small shop.

Available for the first time in soft cover, this book is a classic on the foundations of quantum theory. It examines the subject from a point of view that goes back to Heisenberg and Dirac, and whose definitive mathematical formulation is due to von Neumann. This view, which is essentially geometric and relies on the concept of symmetry, leads most naturally to the fundamental questions that are the basis of all attempts to understand the world of atomic and subatomic particles. The mathematical treatment of symmetry in quantum theory is based on the theory of group representations, and this book includes a self-contained treatment of the parts of this theory that are most useful in quantum physics.

From the Inside Flap
Preface

Since the first edition of West and Wood's Introduction to Foodservice (then titled Foodservice in Institutions) was published in 1938, the authors have been committed to presenting the basic principles of foodservice management, which can be applied to all types of foodservice organizations. This ninth edition is no exception in giving comprehensive coverage of all aspects of foodservice management.

Earlier editions, however, reflected the distinct difference that existed between commercial, or profit-seeking, organizations and noncommercial, or institutional, not-for-profit foodservice operations. Special emphasis was given to institutional foodservices: schools and colleges, hospitals and healthcare facilities, and in-plant or industrial foodservices.

In recent years, a philosophical change has taken place—first gradually, then dramatically—in the management of many not-for-profit institutional foodservices. With rising healthcare costs of recent years and the pressures of healthcare reform, for example, hospitals have become more financially competitive in order to succeed and remain in business. Schools too, are under pressure to implement self-sustaining Child Nutrition Programs by offering revenue generating options such as à la carte lines and catering services and dinners. Today, most foodservices strive for some margin of profit, and make less of a distinction between the two types of foodservice. In response to these changes, the title of this book was changed with the seventh edition to Introduction to Foodservice.

While the focus is on basic principles, this edition also reflects the impact of current social, economic, technological and political factors on foodservice operations. Examples and illustrations reflect both noncommercial and commercial applications. FEATURES

The pedagogical features included in this edition will help students, instructors, and other users maximize the value of this text. Of particular interest are the following:

A case study runs throughout the entire book and allows students to apply the concepts presented through critical thinking questions. Each chapter concludes with a Summary and References. Review Questions at the end of each chapter help pinpoint the important concepts of the subject matter and serve as a study review and test for the reader, ensuring that the more important information is learned. Appendixes on Cooking Methods and Foodservice Equipment serve as ready references for the reader who seeks additional, detailed information. A running Glossary imbedded in chapter margins defines and more clearly explains some of the terms unique to this field of study. In the text, these terms are shown in boldface type.

It is expected that users of this text will also supplement their reading with current journals, trade magazines, and research reports, as well as attend seminars and exhibits at conventions and trade shows to keep themselves up-to-date.

Throughout this edition the material has been updated and revised to reflect current trends and practices. For example, branding and the branded concept as a marketing strategy are thoroughly discussed in Chapter 17. Many new photographs and illustrations are included to help visually interpret the subject matter. In addition, some chapter titles now incorporate new terminology to better reflect the subject matter. ORGANIZATION OF THIS EDITION

Although it is unlikely that two teachers would organize the subject matter of this course in exactly the same way, we believe that the information in this text is presented in a logical sequence. First, the technical operation of a foodservice is discussed so that students will understand what is to be managed, and then the presentation of management techniques follows.

Introduction to Foodservice is divided into four major parts. Part 1, "Foodservice Organizations," provides an overview. Chapter 1 gives a chronological review of the history of foodservice organizations, while Chapter 2 describes types of current foodservice operations.

Part 2, "Quantity Food Production and Service," includes Chapters 3 through 8. This part begins with a chapter on food safety and is followed by a function-by-function description of a foodservice operation. These functions include menu planning, purchasing, production, and service. Each chapter includes factors that influence the management of that operational function.

Part 3, "Facilities," is a four-chapter unit that focuses on the maintenance and design of the operational facilities. The unit begins with a chapter on sanitation and cleaning. Guidance is also offered on how to plan, design, and maintain a foodservice operation.

Part 4, "Management," provides the reader with the basic knowledge to manage the operational functions of a foodservice. Chapter 13 covers the design and management of organizations. It is followed by a comprehensive chapter on human resource management. The unit concludes with chapters on professional qualities such as administrative leadership and skills including work improvement, financial management, and marketing. COURSES FOR WHICH THIS TEXT IS SUITABLE

Although different schools may use this material in a sequence different from that presented here, the subject matter itself is appropriate for courses that include the following (with these or similar titles):

Introduction to Foodservice Management Quantity Food Production Purchasing for Foodservices (both food and equipment) Organization and Management of Foodservices Facility Design and Equipment Arrangement Financial Design and Equipment Arrangement Food Protection and Safety Menu Planning for Foodservices Foodservice Marketing and Merchandising

It is our hope that this newly revised edition of a classic text continues to meet the needs, as it has in the past, of the present generation of students who are preparing to become administrative dietetics, professionals, or foodservice managers. We hope, too, that teachers will find Introduction to Foodservice, Ninth Edition, a helpful guide and that foodservice managers in practice will use it as a ready reference in their work. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

Many people have assisted with the preparation of Introduction to Foodservice. Without their help, our task would have been impossible.

The current authors are deeply appreciative of the excellent work of the original authors, Bessie Brooks West and LeVelle Wood, in providing a text that has been so widely accepted in the United States and abroad for more than 60 years. The text has been recognized for its authenticity and accuracy, a standard that we have striven to maintain in the new edition. Mrs. West assisted with revisions through the fifth edition, before she passed away in 1984 at the age of 93. Miss Wood was active in all revisions through the sixth edition. She died on January 31, 1997. Grace Shugart and Virginia Harger retired as co-authors following publication of the seventh edition. Ms. Shugart passed away in 1995. Ms. Harger has enjoyed an active retirement in Oregon and plans to move to Spokane to be near family and friends.

We are grateful to the peer reviewers, who challenged our thinking and made excellent suggestions for changes or additions to the first drafts of the manuscripts. Their comments were honest and open, and many of their ideas have been incorporated into the text. We believe that their input has made the text even more meaningful to our readers.

The following individuals helped in special ways in the preparation of this edition. To each of them we are greatly indebted and give our thanks.

The Administrative staff at Madison Metropolitan School District, especially Iris Torado and Frank Kelly, for their contributions to the case studies.

Secretarial staff of the Department of Food Science, University of Wisconsin-Madison, for their work on the manuscript. Special thanks to Sarah Grant and Suzanne Smith.

We would like to express special thanks to our editorial staff and production staff at Prentice Hall for their patience in working with us, and for giving encouragement for the completion of this revision. Finally, we wish to acknowledge the support and encouragement of our families and special friends who have endured the countless hours we have devoted to this work. We express our special love and appreciation to Monica's husband, Craig Schiestl, and daughter Emma, and June's husband, Moki, who passed away in June of 1999. We dedicate this edition to his memory.
