Great adaptation

What I loved about this book is that it stays true to the story of the games, but it is also different. It truly pulls you back into the world of Lunar, but it is not fake like a typical novel adaptation of something else like a movie or game.

Someone else pointed out that there are many bigger words in the novel that one would not typically use, but that didn't matter to me. All you have to do it click on the word, and a dictionary.com definition pops up on the screen.

If you love the game, you will love this story. Actually, this story could pull you into the world of Lunar even if you've never played the game series.

I really hope that they continue to translate the rest of the books.

Overwrought, Under Edited & Amateurish

First let me say Lunar: The Silver Star is my favorite video game of all time. It was the first RPG I'd ever played (Shining Force CD doesn't count because that was a tactical RPG) and has been the standard barer ever since. The adventures of Alex, Nall, Ramus, Luna, Jessica, Mia, Nash, and Kyle are as dear and close to my heart as any story I've experienced. Since the Sega CD release I've purchased the game three more times (PSX, Game Boy Advance, and PSP). So, I'm not new to this rodeo.

To be blunt, this story feels like a fan-fiction written by a kid for a middle school homework assignment. And if it was I'd probably be giving it four stars! For an amateur work, it shows promise. But it's not an amateur work. It's written by Kei Shigema, writer of the original Sega CD version, and is being sold as a professional product. I'm sorry to say, it is not.

The prose is overwrought and meandering. Paragraphs are devoted to overflowing description that distracts far more than paints simply because you're wondering where it's all going. Very little is left to the imagination, and not in a good way. It smacks of trying too hard because the writer thinks that this is how a writer is supposed to write description. Also, I've not seen characters speak in such long monologues since my last viewing of a Kevin Smith film, and at least those were typically funny! Most of the spoken dialog swings between bland to over the top. There doesn't appear to be character under the dialog, just stereotypes. Not that even these stay consistent. In one scene Nash is very much literally laughing at the prospect of danger but when Alex reiterates the possibility of danger, Nash next to wets himself with fear. Really, the transition is just that abrupt.

I'm half wondering if this is simply the way novels are written in Japan. I've read a few and they all come away feeling like this. Over written and populated with manic characters.

By biggest peeve with the novel is the liberal use of five-dollar words. I'm a writer, so I feel my vocabulary is a little above average, but never in my wildest dreams would I make some of the reaches this writer did. Maybe the translator is to blame? I don't know. It certainly does feel more mechanical and less like art. Let me give you an example which made me laugh out loud: "Its origin, a poetic ballad passed down from parent to child and child to grandchild over countless generations; and Luna's voice seemed to vividly evoke a sentimental remembrance of every hope and dream left behind by the bygone ages as she voiced each syllabic word with nonpareil mellifluousness."

"Nonpareil mellifluousness"? Really? That's the best way to cap this sentence? Don't get me wrong, this entire sentence is a train wreck and "nonpareil mellifluousness" is simply the exploding passenger car at the end. But over and over and over - barely a page goes by - a very impressive sounding word takes the place of a 50-cent word that would have worked just a well, but not have brought the narrative to a screeching halt.

I come from the Stephen King school of End Your Dialog With "Said". "He said," "she said," whatever. If absolutely necessary an adjective from time to time. So, tell me why ending a piece of dialog with "... he said, rationalizing his decision to everyone." is better than "... he rationalized."? This happens all the time. Again, another example of over writing that you see from amateurs, not professionals.

I could go on, provide more examples (don't get me started on the ridiculous use of ellipses), but it's not worth the time. Honestly, I don't see anyone other than a fan of the franchise picking up this book. I am, and I did. And I'm sorry that I did.

Kei Shigima creates many beautiful places with words, discussing descriptions of places and travelers. Later on they have funny quarrels between Nall and Nash, and the dialogue between characters is amazing.

A truly inspiring book

I have taken classes from Gwen for over 25 years, yet the quilt on page 7 still blew me away. By the time I got to the last page I had dozens of inspirations for my next dozen quilts. Thank you Martingale for publishing this wonderful collection of the work by an amazing quilter and a wonderful person. Thank you Gwen for being such a great inspiration for me being true to my own style in quilting. I love drawing out what I want to do, love the challenge of figuring out how to do it, and the freedom to change my mind along the way is the best. The quality of this book is the highest and the photography is perfect. This quote from the book is what I aspire to: making quilts that are "unstudied, unpretentious, and more interesting, not to mention less stressful and more fun to make." The book is everything I thought it would be times five.

This book, the first full biography of the remarkable life of Anita Garibaldi, tells the true story of a fascinating and important woman. Illiterate and poor, the daughter of a herdsman in 19th century Brazil, Anita was lifted from a life of obscurity to one that is the stuff of romance and adventure. When she and a young Italian exile by the name of Captain Giuseppe Garibaldi met in 1839, they joined in the cause of founding a Brazilian republic. Later they went on to lead the defense of Montevideo from an Argentine siege—just one episode among many in their idealistic, nationalistic crusade in a time of immense revolutionary upheaval. It was Anita who taught Garibaldi the guerrilla ways of the gauchos, and they lived as man and wife through a series of adventure and wars. Returning to Italy in 1848 to fight for a united republican Italy, as revolution swept throughout Europe, Anita and Garibaldi were tragically separated by her untimely death the following year. Garibaldi went on to ultimate fame as the father of modern Italy—while Anita's story drifted into the mists of legend.

A Bright Flame

An Interesting Slice of History

When reading a biography of Giuseppe Verdi I first became aware of Anita Garibaldi, wife of the hero of the Risorgimento, Giuseppe Garibaldi. I knew when I ordered the book it was a translation from the Italian. Unfortunately, the writing seems somewhat akwward, probably because the skill of the translator may have been limited. It's not a book that would appeal to the casual reader but it filled in some holes for me.

Anita herself is a fascinating character and I appreciated reading her story. She had a brief life but lived more than most people do who live three times as long, due to her passion, fearlessness, and both physical and emotional strength. She was a bright flame which flared briefly both in her native Argentina and in Italy, and her recognition as a heroine is well deserved.

I bought this for a guinea-pig owning coworker, and read it myself. It is just adorable, full of cute pictures and pithy sentences. After reading it, I was tempted to get a guinea pig myself, which is about the highest praise one can give a pet book.

I'm a big fan of George Puckett's recipes. I wouldn't call it a recipe book as it is just one recipe, but George goes into detail on how to make the item, showing you all the ingredients and how to put them together. This is much better than just a recipe listed with directions. The pictures are what make these single recipe books worth the price.
