About the Author
Henry Cecil, known to many as His Honour Judge H.C. Leon, MC, was a High Court judge as well as a famous author. He wrote during the three-week-long family holidays which were usually spent in comfortable hotels in Britain. He would sit in a deck chair in a sunny garden, exercise book on lap and pen in hand, writing from 10 am to 1pm, then again from 2.30 to 4 pm each day. His writing career is attributed to his Second World War experiences. Sailing around the Cape on a 'dry' troop ship on the way to Cairo, the colonel asked his adjutant (Cecil) to tell stories to keep the officers' minds off alcohol. The stories were so popular that they became a regular feature, and formed the basis of his first collection, 'Full Circle', published in 1948. Thereafter, the legal year, his impressions at court, or at other official functions, as well as dinners at the Savoy Grill or at his club, the Garrick, all provided material for his considerable brain power. Many of his stories were made into films or plays - notably 'Brothers-in-Law' and 'Alibi for a Judge'. These and other books have also provided a stimulus for those wishing to take up law as a career. They are a delight for those who look for authenticity in the most aptly described British characters. Cecil died in May 1976, still at the height of his mental powers.

A Primer for Executive Coaches

Being familiar with the excellent work of Dr. Kantor, I was eager to read Reading the Room. Unfortunately, I was disappointed. I found the scenarios that are woven throughout the book to be unrealistic and contrived. The majority of the book reads like a college text, requiring a considerable commitment of time and effort to read and understand. I do not doubt that this work has great value for the executive coach (which I am not). But I cannot picture the time-strapped business leader (which I was for over twenty years until my retirement) making the investment necessary to find the value.

Here's a brilliant examination of one of the most important but seldom fully appreciated leadership skills

An interview of David Kantor by Rutger von Post appeared an issue of strategy+business magazine during which Kantor explains how leaders can tap into "structural dynamics" to create better-performing teams. The interview prompted me to obtain a copy of Reading the Room. I have just read it and then re-read highlighted passages. In my opinion, over time, this book will become a business "classic" because it provides about as much information, insights, and counsel that any executive could possibly need to understand how and why system theory (i.e. the study of phenomena as systems of interrelated parts) has its own notion of structure. Kantor delves into this structure of face-to-face communication, defines its parts, and examines how these interdependent parts interact.

As Kantor explains, "The title of this book refers to a priceless leadership skill: the ability to [begin italics] read the room [end italics] to understand what's going on as people communicate in small groups, including how the leader himself or herself is participating, when the conversation is moving forward, when it may be just about to leave the rails, and possibly even how to guide it back on course."

With regard to structural, it "connotes the idea that there is an underlying, largely unconscious structure to all human verbal exchange: when people converse, they construct and follow implicit understandings and patterns in which their conversation takes place."

As for dynamics, it "connotes the idea that ongoing patterns, functional and dysfunctional, are inherent in all continuing talk, and that dysfunctional ones result from clashes between people and the structures they bring into conversation."

I commend Kantor on his exceptionally clever use of boxed mini-commentaries -- "From Insight to Action" -- throughout the narrative that anchor the reader's focus on especially key points, in context, within a thematic frame-of-reference. The material is provided from the perspective of an executive but will also be of substantial value to those who receive the coaching. In fact, taking a wider view of the term "coach," one of a leader's most important responsibilities is to help others develop their leadership schools. This can be accomplished only with direct, frequent, and enlightened supervision. Therefore, I highly recommend this book to those who coach (supervise) and those with whom they work.

I started reading this book at the recommendation of a friend, it is well worth the effort it takes to read the entire book.It provides a keen insight to the way we operate in group relationships, whether those are business, family or friends. I found myself reliving past interactions and finding additional insight on what drive individuals and eventually the outcomes.

Mostly harmless

An interesting read, but for the most part a harried chronicling of people and trends (mostly people) in a hyper dynamic space. A lot of Nobel laureate name dropping (to which, to their credit, they admit!). Has the feel of someone trying to get a book out there to take advantage of the thirst for new insight. Some good brain candy.

Would have expected a better "primer" on how block chain actually works. Given the audience this tome appears aimed at, a few paragraphs ("How this worldwide ledger works") seems a bit under-serving - particularly for such an avowedly history-changing paradigm. Readers must understand this thing before trusting it, which for the most part is mysterious and geeky. Demystification would help move blockchain out of the comfort zone of PhD's into the realm of the mere unwashed (in which this reviewer sits). And nothing on the mystery surrounding Satoshi himself - what's up with that? Given that we're dealing with a new trust paradigm, doesn't the fact of his anonymity (existence?) not at least merit some comment?

Only part I would recommend is found at Chapter 10 "Showstopper issues"... Ironic, of course but best analysis is here!

Excellent, clear & concise. I found this a great discussion about the possibilities of Blockchain. It covers present applications, and then takes the reader beyond the now into the realm of possibility! All the while based in realism, some ideas may flourish, some may fail. I recommend it to anyone wanting a foundational understanding of Blockchain.

The authors explain how the blockchain could be a force for good, improving the outcomes for millions of people

The most interesting, groundbreaking book I have read in years. This has got to be one of, if not the most, authorititive books out there on the blockchain. It does not focus on technical matters and can be read by a lay person not very familiar with how blockchain technology and cryptography work. Nor is it simply about Bitcoin (blockchains are about much more than Bitcoin). Less about how it works, than about how blockchain technology has the potential to transform the spheres of commerce, finance, management, public administration, politics, government and society in general (not to mention other applications). Must surely be compulsary reading for anyone wishing to explore how to create and exchange value, devise new business models and futureproofing in this age of information and big data. It is not however a book targeted only at e-commerce of financial services people. The authors explain how the blockchain could be a force for good, improving the outcomes for millions of people, particularly those in developing countries who are currently excluded from the financial system and the formal economy. They remind us of course that as with any other technology the blockchain is 'neutral', in that it is not inherently a 'good' or a 'bad' thing; it depends on how people choose to deploy it.

Adult fairy tale :)

I was very intrigued by Decadent Publishing's Beyond Fairytales line so I was more than happy to jump in and read Desiree Holt's Knockin' Boots which is an adaptation of The Brothers Grimm's The Boots of Buffalo Leather. As a child I was a sucker for fairytales even those that weren't always pretty, but I'm going to admit right now that these very ADULT fairytales are decadently hot. An ex-Marine trying to outrun his PTSD and the couple who decides he is just what they need to complete their lives makes this one sexy ménage story.
This is a novella so the story moves at a very fast pace and sure it may be a little crazy to think that something like this might happen so easily in a conservative Texas town but remember...this is a fairy tale and those always stretch the bounds of reality. When Clint Gorman rides into Whistling Creek, Texas he's just looking for someplace to find some peace and maybe a woman who enjoys life a little on the wild side. Meeting Dan Franklin by accident and then sharing his secrets with him seemed so out of place for Clint, but when Dan invites him to meet his wife, Kylie, and offers him just what he's looking for he decides to take a chance never knowing that Dan and Kylie are about the change his life forever.

I really enjoyed this fast paced story about a very committed couple who had searched for someone to share their lives and their bed with. Dan and Kylie immediately felt a connection to Clint and he to them and this spilled over in to everything the three did together from talking about life to the kinky sex they all three crave. Each and every minute of this story was pure pleasure and while we get a little background on Clint's life and what set him on his journey, we don't really get to know Dan and Kylie's background and that is something I'd really like to know more about. My hope is that this author may revisit these characters at a later date and let us in on how their life together if progressing.

Outrageously sexy and sinfully delicious Knockin' Boots is an adult fairytale that lovers of erotic romance and ménage will definitely want to read.

Now this is what I call a fairy tale. I loved the story. Yes I am a sucker for a happy ending always have been, always will be. Well written story. I encourage you to get this book now. It's worth your time and effort. It is a quick read, just enough for an afternoon. I truly enjoyed this book. Desiree Holt writes great books and this one fits right in with all her others.
