The coverage will begin with Homer in the eighth century BCE and will focus most heavily on Classical Greece and Rome from the Republic to the early Empire, though sources reflecting societal changes in later antiquity and a selection of Jewish and Christian readings will also be included. Authors will include Hippocrates, Plato, Aristotle, Galen, Ovid and Plutarch, with each chapter including one or two substantial 'focal' readings. The materials will include poetry, history, oratory, medical and philosophical writings, letters, and inscriptions, both public and private.

This book is absolutely brilliant.

Having taken a few courses with Dr. Jennifer Larson, I am deeply indebted to her clarity, rigor, and careful attention to her audience. This book provides an excellent breadth of sources on sexuality in antiquity, and anyone who is even remotely interested in the subject should read this book. I received this book as a gift from someone who knew about my interest in feminism, sexuality, and ancient Greek culture. I expected it to be an interesting collection of sources that would show me what else is out there to read on the topics that interest me. Not only did this book fulfill that purpose, but it raised thousands of interpretive and narrative questions as I read the sources that Dr. Larson compiled. Her commentary is indispensable. The sources are well-selected for interest, importance, and influence. Do not pass on this book.
