About the Author
Brenda Davis is a registered dietitian in private practice and co-authored The New Becoming Vegetarian, Becoming Vegan, Defeating Diabetes, and The Raw Food Revolution Diet.

She has worked as an academic nutrition instructor, a public health nutritionist, a clinical dietitian, and a nutrition consultant. Brenda specializes in essential fatty acid nutrition and life cycle challenges, and has published numerous articles on these and other topics relating to vegetarian nutrition.

Vesanto Melina is co-author of the Position Paper on Vegetarian Diets and coordinated the vegetarian section of the Manual of Clinical Dietetics, 6th Edition, both joint projects of the American Dietetic Association and Dietitians of Canada.

Vesanto has taught nutrition at the University of British Columbia and Bastyr University, and is an internationally known speaker and consultant to individuals, government, and the food industry on vegetarian nutrition and foods. Among her published books, Vesanto co-authored Becoming Vegan, The New Becoming Vegetarian, and The Food Allergy Survival Guide.

Rynn Berry is the historical advisor to the North American Vegetarian Society and was recently commissioned to write the entry on the history of vegetarianism in America for the Oxford Encyclopedia of American Food and Drink (2005).

He is the author of six major books on vegetarianism that include The New Vegetarians, Famous Vegetarians, Food for the Gods: Vegetarianism and the World's Religions, Hitler: Neither Vegetarian Nor Animal Lover, and an annual publication The Vegan Guide to New York City.

Rynn is a regular speaker at the annual Vegetarian Summerfest , is a popular radio guest who appears frequently on talk shows from coast to coast, and has had his articles published in national and international newspapers and magazines included The New York Times, The Toronto Star, and The London Sunday Telegraph.

The bible for a raw food lifestyle

This is so much more than a simple raw food cookbook or commentary on raw food diets. I was surprised at the amount of information packed into this book. It has all sorts of nutritional information and easy to read tables on just about anything you can imagine relating to this way of eating. Here are just a few titles of the tables included: Research summary of the effects of cooking on phytochemicals, Calories, protein, fat, carbohydrate and water in raw food (6 pages long), Fatty acid composition of selected foods, Vitamins in raw foods, Minerals in raw foods, Vitamins A,C,E,K, and D: adult dietary reference intakes and intakes on raw and high-raw diets. And those are just a few. I like tables because I can get information at a glance and compare different values so this is really a good book for me.

You don't have to be a total raw food convert to enjoy this book. Even if you're just thinking about adding more healthful raw foods to your diet, I think you'll find this book as useful as I have. It starts out with a history of the raw food movement, gives lots of scientific evidence on why it can be a healthy way of eating, and then goes on to give all kinds of information, things you've probably never even thought about, on incorporating raw foods into your diet or going totally raw. It tells you what you need to know if you do decide to take the plunge, about getting all the nutrients you need.

There is a small section with raw food recipes and another section with full meal menus which I found especially helpful. I'm not looking (yet) to totally adopt this kind of diet but I would like to add a lot more raw food to our everyday meals. The recipes are pretty easy and there are a good variety. A few that I've tried and enjoyed are: Caesar's Better Salad, Warm Red Cabbage Salad, Morocc-Un-Butter and Marvelous Muesli. There's also a section on handling raw food safely and another on food enzymes. It's all easy to read and understand.

There's a large reference section, a glossary and an index. To me, this is important because I want to know the science or studies behind statements, not just take the author at his word. This is a high quality book, probably the best I've found on this subject.

Becoming Raw: The Essential Guide to Raw Vegan Diets is a complete guide to the raw diet- a type of diet/lifestyle that has a strong following and continues to gain more and more adherents. This book covers all of the essentials of the raw diet and more. The reader ultimately becomes much better informed on the subject and completes the book loaded with knowledge on everything related to eating raw.

Becoming Raw is a complete guide to the raw diet and, in many ways, it is like reading an educational textbook on raw food nutrition. I am no expert on the subject of nutrition, so I knew there would be much to learn when I opened this book for the first time. My expectations were correct, for Becoming Raw is loaded with information on nutrition and eating raw foods. It teaches you about the building blocks of food, like carbohydrates, protein, fat, vitamins, and minerals. It offers recipes, nutritional tables, and other reference materials. It educates the reader on the many benefits that raw fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and other foods bring to the body. It covers a wide range of topics and serves as a very informative book on this subject.

Individuals who are trying to lose weight will find that a diet in raw foods is certainly a good, viable way to drop pounds and many people will read this book for that reason alone. But Becoming Raw is much more than a book dedicated to those who are determined to reduce their waistline. This book is useful to anyone who wants to eat better and learn about the many benefits that a plant- based diet can bestow on the body. A diet rich in these raw foods can, for example, offer protection against cardiovascular disease, reverse the effects of some common ailments, and shorten the span of common illnesses such as the common cold. With benefits such as these, most anyone can adopt the raw diet, even if only to an extent, and emerge healthier than before. This book discusses all of these benefits and more, and it even offers a short history on going raw and how/why this type of eating lifestyle continues to grow in popularity.

Becoming Raw, at first, sounded like it was going to be a reference book and I wasn't sure it would be very useful to someone like myself, who is not a vegetarian. However, as you can see from the above commentary, this book is actually a combination reading/reference guide with facts about foods, the meaning of eating raw, recipes that include raw foods, etc. The book does include graphs, tables, charts, etc., but there the majority of the books pages are comprised of reading material intended to educate the reader on the different components of food, why they are important to the body, how deficiencies can affect the body, etc.

Everyone can benefit from introducing raw, unprocessed food into the diet and Becoming Raw is an excellent book about this important subject. It is a book about your eating lifestyle, with complete coverage of the raw diet, explanations of nutritional facts and data, nutritional charts, history of the movement, recipes, and more. It's an exhaustive guide that can be referred to repeatedly for advice and general information.

Are you thinking about Becoming Raw? If you are, this book is a must have!! This is the most informative, complete book I've ever read on this subject. I thought I knew a lot about healthy eating, vitamins and minerals in foods and what food was good for what ailment, but this book is full of information I did not know.

I've always wanted to try eating raw. With this book it would be so easy to do. The book is full of drafts and charts. In my opinion, there is no biased information in this book, it is just full of facts and you can draw your own conclusion.

My favorite recipes, even though there were only a few, were the Smoothies. I know I'll be using them often.

This is a book that you can either live by on a daily basis, or go to whenever you start feeling sluggish and want a boost. I know there have been many studies on the health benefits of going raw, from diabetes, to cholesterol and high blood pressure. This is one of the best books I've come across about eating raw.

The story of Mary Stuart has been told in many contexts (most recently in Elizabeth and Mary), but nowhere has she been defended more rigorously than in this new study. Guy, a fellow at Cambridge University and BBC consultant, describes Mary's formative years in France, but the heart of the book is her short reign in Scotland. Negotiations with Elizabeth Tudor over the succession in England and the shadow of Mary's final fate dominate the narrative, but while Guy effectively establishes that Elizabeth's chief minister William Cecil was Mary's true English enemy, what is most shocking is how suppliant he shows Mary to have been to Elizabeth. The most dramatic moments, however, are supplied by the Scottish nobles, who shifted alliances around her and colluded in kidnappings and assassinations. Though not the first to challenge Mary's femme fatale image, Guy does not even deign to discuss the accusation that she was romantically involved with her Italian secretary Rizzio and convincingly absolves her of involvement in the death of her second husband. He re-examines her actions and choices and offers a lively textual analysis of letters usually used as evidence against her. Yet he does not conclusively argue that she ruled from the head, and, in the end, the question of whether Mary Stuart ruled from her head or her heart appears beside the point. Guy's detailed account of the familial, political and religious machinations of the forces swirling around the queen suggests that it was not flaws in Mary's character but the entire constellation of circumstances that doomed her rule in Scotland and led to her execution. 16 pages of b&w photos.

A fresh look at Mary Queen of Scots life and loves and plots

In this lively biography John Guy has produced a new, thoughtful, and very well researched, portrait of the much maligned Mary, Queen of Scots. He has dug up records that have not been used by historians in over 100 years and for the first time fully reviewed all the original documents relating to the death of her husband Darnley and come up with some very interesting results.

Mary comes across as an intelligent, well educated, politically astute woman when she finally took her place on the throne of Scotland. It's often easy to overlook the fact that for close to 5 years she successfully ruled Scotland and its plotting Lords in her own name before the dramatic events which shaped her eventual fate took place. John Guy successfully puts these years of successful rule in their place and presents a version of the death of her husband Darnley that makes a great deal of sense given the evidence of this event that is still preserved in English archives.

Mary's later captive years are dealt with in less detail, but the plots that eventually bought about her death are presented in with insight and detail. This biography has a lot of new information on Mary, and if you are interested in this complex and tragic historical figure then this book is a must, and it will make you re-think some of the assumptions in earlier biographies.

Learned a lot of interesting facts about Mary although did not love writing style.
Interestingly found Reign pretty close to story until Francis became ill then veers. Although m y husband says the clothing etc is not accurate!

An outstanding addition. . .

I used other volumes in the Aramaic Bible series while in seminary, so it seemed only logical, now that I have begun teaching, to continue to do so. The Targum of the Minor Prophets has proven to be a valuable addition to my course materials on the Minor Prophets, provoking much excellent class discussion, and shedding light on difficult passages in this portion of Scripture.
Any serious student of the Minor Prophets, whether Christian or Jewish, should pay serious attention to this excellent work.
I highly recommend it.

Should the Aramaic translator said something different about Jonah and the Whale?

My reviews of the two volumes Targum Neofiti 1: Genesis and Targum Pseudo-Jonathan: Genesis give information about this 19 volume series that presents an English translation of the Aramaic translations of the Hebrew Bible. This is volume 14 of the series. It renders the Aramaic translation of the twelve "minor prophets" into English and points out how the translators gave us a non-literal rendering and how they inserted their own views; views they felt their readers need to know. Reading their translations, we might feel that they should have made additional changes.

It should be noted that despite the current title "minor prophets," these prophets are not considered "minor" people or "minor" books by Jews and Christians. The term "minor" signifies that the writings are brief. The twelve volumes were collected into a single book because of their small size, but each prophet had his own message to his own audience, in his own particular time, and each spoke differently. The following are some examples of how one of these Aramaic translators altered and did not alter the prophets' messages.

The story of Jonah and the whale is one of the twelve. The translator adds information several times in the first three verses to emphasize that the word that came from the Lord to Jonah was a "prophecy." He disparages the behavior of the frightened sailors during the storm at sea; they didn't "cry out": "each man prayed to his idol, but they saw that it was useless." The biblical book has the name "Hebrew," which was what non-Israelites called Israelites, but the translator substituted the name used when he was writing, "Jew."

While rational Jewish and non-Jewish thinkers consider the episode of the fish swallowing Jonah and keeping him alive in its belly for three days a parable, the Aramaic translator renders this verse without any change. Similarly, while he changes virtually every other passage in Jonah in some way, he renders "And the Lord spoke to the fish, and it threw Jonah up on the dry land," without any change.
