THIS is a GREAT read, an awesome page turner

I LOVE this book. I have read several books through the Amazon Vine program, and I always try to pick authors I am not familiar with. Some have been good, some not so much, THIS is a great suspense novel.

I am not one who believes that the opening line of a story is critical, that said, this one is pretty darn good. Title, The Night Monster, opening line, "Cops weren't supposed to get frightened." How great is that, it just conjures up a picture of a police officer encountering something in the line of duty so beyond his comprehension and experience, he is afraid, or as the case develops, terrified by a life altering event.

As a brief summary, the story is presented in the first person by Jack Carpenter, a former detective. Jack works on finding missing people. To characterize Jack as tenacious is really selling him short. He is willing to do anyting to find and save a missing person. The zeal lead to his early departure from the police force.

Jack's story shows us the bare emotional journey that a parent seaching for a missing child can go through. We can feel the pain and anguish. Jack is not a superhuman, he is not robocop, just a driven guy who wants to make a difference.

This is a super page turner, you will not be able to put it down. I recommend this without hesitation or reservation.

Simply Superb - A Definite Page-Burner

Yes, you will be up all night finishing this book if you plan on starting it any time after 8pm. So be forewarned.

From the opening chapter, with the search for a missing elementary school child, the story burns from one moment to the next. Admittedly, the main character's set up is a cliche - the ex-cop turned private eye with a laser-focus on his expertise (in this case, finding missing kids). But as John Gardner once wrote, All American fiction boils down to one of two plot lines - man rides into town or man rides out of town - it's what the author does with that story that counts. And boy does James Swain deliver.

Once you read that first bit of chapter 3 as the main character, Jack Carpenter, is searching for a missing boy, you know this is not your typical hard-boiled ex-cop story: "Water has a magical effect on autistic children. It calls to them like a siren's song. I found this out...."

This is not your standard cliched ex-cop whose life is on a downward slope; he's got good parts of his life (his relationship with his daughter) and some not so good (his relationship with his estranged wife). Throughout the story, Jack tries to reclaim his life. Sometimes it works and sometimes, well the typical "Hollywood story-telling" does not appear, making his frustrations and experiences much more real (like when Jack tries to buy his old house).

The story is fantastically paced, the writing is well done, and the unique twists will definitely catch you a bit off guard. Just an excellent, suspenseful mystery, and extremely well worth your time.

I'd not read any of James Swain's books before this; now I'll be reading them all.

When Australian chefs Stephanie Alexander and Maggie Beer arrived in Tuscany to run a cooking school, they had no idea how much fun they were going to have. Their Tuscan Cookbook is the result of those magical two months. Meals revolved around basic ingredients: bread, tomatoes, olive oil, and wine. The first lesson was: "The fruit and vegetables were so fresh that they had to be used immediately: when one is surrounded by produce picked when ready to eat this is exactly what one must do!" Students and teachers alike learned to produce sumptuous meals based on what the market had that morning. One day it might be Grilled Squab with a Gratin of Squash or perhaps Herbed Pasta with Fresh Tomato and Red Onion Sauce. Another day is might be Rotolo di Spinaci preceded by an antipasto with mozzarella-stuffed zucchini flowers and marinated mussels. A book to transport you

I have owned this book for three years now and whenever I want to transport myself back to Tuscany and the green rolling hills of the Chianti countryside I just open this book. Maggie Beer and Stephanie Alexander are true legends of food and wine in Australia and their innate knowledge and love of their art shines through every page. This book was the result of the two cucina divas combining their talents to run a cooking school in Italy.
The hardcover volume is beautifully bound with superb photography. The narrative is flowing and friendly and makes you feel like you are in a conversation with the two whilst cleaning porcini mushrooms or sampling thin slices of prosciutto.
The recipes are explained clearly and are in keeping with the simplicity and freshness of true Italian cuisine. This is a book for lovers of Italian food but also for lovers of food based on fresh, seasonal produce. The recipes are not complicated and do not rely on long labourious hours in the kitchen. The Rotolo di Spinaci recipe has won me accolades every time I have made it. I recommend this book to anyone interested in true Tuscan cooking.

A collaborative compilation and effort by Stephanie Alexander and Maggie Beer, Tuscan Cookbook: Recipes And Reminiscences From The Italian Cooking School is superbly enhanced with the full color photography of Simon Griffiths and showcases a cornucopia of wonderful dishes. From Salsa Agresto; Green Salad with Walnuts and Verjuice; Herbed Pasta with Fresh Tomato and Red Onion Sauce; and Figs Stewed in Amaro Syrup; to Spinach with Lemon, Garlic, and Pine Nuts; Baked Prune Plum and Mascarpone Tart; Cuttlefish Salad; and Pheasant in Vin Santo with Chestnuts and Pancetta, Tuscan Cookbook is as much fun to simply browse through as it is inspiring to plan a menu with. A true culinary treasure, the Tuscan Cookbook is a welcome and treasured addition to any dedicated gourmet cookbook collection.

Extraordinary!

This is an excellent "recreational" cookbook, perfect for your coffee table or library. Exceptional photographs and relatively few, but very well chosen recipes. I have tried several of the recipes and did not find myself even tempted to make alterations. The "Grilled Quail in a Grape bath" as well as the Mascrapone tart, were two of my favorites, so far! Buy with confidence, you'll treasure this one for years!

CAROLYNE BARRY: For the last 30 years, Carolyne has achieved recognition in front and behind the camera, as an actress, teacher, casting director, director and producer. She has over 100 film, television and theatre acting credits and has appeared in more than 400 national commercials. Miss Barry has created unique, successful products for actors: Lights Camera Kids, a DVD program for child actors and (co-created) Getting The Job, a CD program for professional actors. Anoyne who has enjoyed even minor success in the entertainment industry will agree that a personal acting career is nothing short of running a business. Without creating a structured business plan, recognizing pitfalls before they occur, solidifying a method for obtaining both quantitative and qualitative results and developing a strategy for continually moving forward, the newcomer has already stacked the deck against their favor.

I am one of the lucky individuals who found Carolyne Barry early in my career. Her lessons not only helped me to cultivate a vastly successful commercial acting career, they also forced me to look at myself introspectively and find my own inspiration from within. The professional actor walks a treacherous road and Carolyne Barry's lessons have been best traveling mates that I've found.

The fact that her wisdom is now available in a single book is amazing! I happily and wholeheartedly recommend Carolyne Barry's book, "Hit The Ground Running." It belongs in every working actor's toolbox.

Devotion to Actors: She Cares.

This book is an invaluable resource for actors who want to WORK in the biz in LA... especially if you want to earn some good money doing commercials. I have taken classes from Carolyne Barry. I have experienced her books, cds, and online products. What I can say... my experience is that she deeply cares about her students and she is GREAT at what she does. I find that if a person really cares... if they really love their students, everything else falls into place. She cares. she cares enough to tell you the truth even if you don't want to hear it... because it will help you. I am an actor who has been in LA for just over a year now, and my only regret is that I didn't read Carolyne's book before I arrived. The valuable information she shares is essential to have a chance in this competitive industry. Not only does Carolyne provide specific, in-touch information (w/ a timeline) based on over 30 years of experience as a successful actress, coach and casting professional, but she helps inspire the reader to reflect and develop the personal tools needed for success as well. It's rare to see such a savvy, strategic business mind coupled with such creative, artistic talent. The book covers everything from classes, training, planning, pictures and packaging to budgeting, organization and time management. I would HIGHLY recommend reading this book if you're a serious actor looking for real success.

Günter Musmann (editor),born 1938 in Salzgitter-Bad,studied Physics in Göttingen and Braunschweig,PhD 1968 in Physics.1964 a fluxgate magnetometer experiment on the first German satellite AZUR , launched 1968.Since those days he has developed and launched together with his collegues from Germany,Russia,USA,UK,France,Italy,Denmark numerous fluxgate magnetometer experiments (DIAL,HeliosA+B ,GIOTTO,MARS94/96,CLUSTER,Tether1+2, studying the EARTH and other planets magnetic fields on sattelites and spacecrafts up to the latest NASA ion engine spacecraft Deep Space One and NASA/ESA's Cassini to Saturn and ESA's ROSETTA, still on its way to comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko(arrival 2014). Besides those investigations he has successfully launched several rocket magnetic field experiments into the Equatorial -and Polar Electrojet and conducted several Geothermal Research projects .
