Yet Hilary Knight, best known for his Eloise illustrations, manages to apply his unique wit and familiar illustrative style to the fairy tale while retaining the magic of the original story. Cinderella is lovely, of course, and her nasty sisters are pointy-nosed and outrageously vain. But Knight's depiction of Prince Charming provides a happy departure from tradition: he's pudgy and, well, kind of goofy looking. Modern readers will like Cinderella's slightly more brazen ways, too; although still demure, Cinderella steps right out of the kitchen when the prince arrives at her house with the glass slipper. "Let me try," she says, much to her stepmother and sisters' horror. Astute readers will enjoy picking up on subtle details: the tiny fairy godmother hiding under Cinderella's pumpkin-like stool, Cinderella's mother's gravestone in the front yard, and poor, beleaguered Cinderella's chore list next to the invitation to the Prince's ball. The pen-and-watercolor pictures show the gravestone of Cinderella's mother by the front doorway and the unpleasant stepsisters constantly bickering. Cinderella looks like a sweet `60s model as she goes about her work, and the prince seems like a pudgy fop. The story ends with the stepsisters forgiven and, if the pictures are any indication, happy to wait hand and foot on the newlyweds. All in all, a workaday version of the popular tale.

Fresh and Enchanting.....

We've all heard the Cinderella story many, many times...the mean stepmother, the ugly stepsisters, a kind fairy godmother who works her magic so that Cinderella can go to the ball, and of course, the handsome prince. Hilary Knight has taken this old fairy tale and given it a gentler, fresh and engaging new life. His simple and easy to read text is delightfully entertaining. But it's Mr Knight's marvelous illustrations that really make this picture book stand out. His expressive artwork, in warm and lovely subdued tones, is enchanting and filled with charming and humorous detail. Together, word and art transport children to a magical once-upon-a-time place. Perfect for youngsters 4 and older, Hilary Knight's Cinderella is a wonderful read aloud story the entire family can share, and is sure to bring happily-ever-after dreams to all your little ones.

being an amateur artist,i was mostly interested in the drawings and i was delighted to see such detail on every page. i think the era represented is the 1820s? or 1830s?. a lot of thought went into this and i praise the artist! very good work. enjoy.

My favorite Cinderella book

I believe I was about 5 years old or so when I got this book. I treasured this book as a child when my mother gave this to me. I was fascinated by the beautiful illustrations, particularly the very pointy shoes and big poofy sleeves on all the women! The story is the same classic as always, so of course there's nothing wrong there. This is such a gorgeous book though when you compare it to the typical old Disney look. The illustrations in this version truly make this book. I wish I knew what happend to my original copy. I can't wait to get my hands on this again for both myself, nieces, and maybe a future daughter of my own!

At the same time they have been criticized by extreme-right groups for ignoring honour killings and other ?culture-based? forms of violence against women. How can we make sense of this varied terrain?

In this important and challenging new book, Alison Phipps constructs a political sociology of women?s bodies around key debates: sexual violence, gender and Islam, sex work and motherhood. Her analysis uncovers dubious rhetorics and paradoxical allegiances, and contextualizes these within the powerful coalition of neoliberal and neoconservative frameworks. She explores how ?feminism? can be caricatured and vilified at both ends of the political spectrum, arguing that Western feminisms are now faced with complex problems of positioning in a world where gender often comes second to other political priorities.

Brandenburger (Harvard Business Sch.) and Nalebuff (Yale Sch. of Management) argue that most businesses and their transactions lie somewhere between the two poles. Their liberating message is that your competitor does not have to fail for you to win. Conversely, you don't have to fail either. Your failure, in fact, can hurt your competitor. It is better, the authors assert, to have both cooperation and competition. Game theory requires drawing a representation of one's customers, suppliers, competitors, and complementers. In this strategy of business as a game, the rules, players, tactics, and scope can be changed to the individual's advantage. The authors present complicated cases to illustrate their points. The writing is usually solid, but the authors went to the well too many times with some of their examples. A little variety in illustrating their ideas would have been welcome. Creating better strategies using game theory

Just out of college I was very enthusiastic to use game theory to solve business problems. But never found a way to use it. That was forty years ago. This is the first book that transforms a wonderful theory into something you can apply. The three key concepts are the "value net", PARTS and role-playing. The value net is a simple model of the players to consider. Not just your business and your client, but also the competitors, suppliers and complementors (a complimentor adds value to your product like mustard to hot dogs). PARTS are five ways to look at the game. P from players-who are they; may be add new ones, A from Added Value- how much value do you add to the game, if any, R from Rules-can the rules be changed, T from tactics, and S from Scope- making the game bigger. With role-playing I refer to putting yourself in the shoes of all the other players. How do they see the game? The book contains many practical examples. Some of these do not require game theory to think of them but without game theory you would never see all the interesting options. The book also has "spiritual" content. It shows how to find "win-win" theories and avoid price wars that are "lose-lose".Very worthwhile.

A �must-read� for sure

First of all I should state that this book is the kind that will make you ask yourself "Why have I not read it before?"! I strongly recommend it and shortly I will try to explain whom I recommend it and why.
In fact, we are not talking about some recent business book, and therefore the potential reader should not expect to see very recent cases as support to arguments discussed. But still, the issues are very systematically, clearly and simply explained, although the examples that are used to support the arguments are "old".
I met this "potential classic business book" (or maybe already a "classic business book") as I began to be interested in game theory. Therefore I can easily declare that "Co-opetition" is very appropriate for a person who would like to see solid, practical and especially business-oriented application areas of game theory. With this book, a "101 game theorist" can try and improve herself easily. But on the other hand, this doesn't mean that the only target readers of the book are the ones that are interested in game theory. The authors have achieved to develop and illustrate practical recommendations for business world by utilizing game theory concepts. So anyone who is business life will benefit from the concepts for sure.
The language and the methods of explanation are very clear, far from being complicated and straightforward. The authors have supported all the major concepts and conclusions by using real-life examples. This way, the reader has more "reasons" to learn and remember the arguments discussed throughout the book. The logical order and the simple modular approach used to lead the discussions also help the reader understand everything explained easily. Although the book is in fact a "strategy book", the reader does not have to be someone with background information on strategy. But still, if the reader already has some background in strategic analysis, then the book offers a much more beneficial and enjoyable read. On top of everything, the nice but "not-so-difficult-to-handle complexity" of game theory itself is the real pleasure of the book.
I recommend this book to college students who are to enter business life shortly, to people with active roles in strategic decision making processes of their corporations and to people who are interested in game theory but who don't want to cope with the mathematical models of it. Have a nice read...

It is an interesting approach to building win-win growth opportunities. The PARTS concept is an easy to remember idea that has been successful in several sited examples. Co-opetition discusses viable ideas that should be considered, particularly the "Pay me to play" suggestion. If the strategist carefully considers all options in the "big picture", they would undoubtedly use one or several of the ideas presented in this book. This book serves as a reminder manual when developing strategy.

Good writing, technical problems

Very high quality writing (what I've read so far), but the Kindle version is marred by a missing link to the table of contents. You have to go to the cover, then page forward. I bought this originally for the Jack McDevitt story, and then couldn't remember why I bought it because the "first" page is the beginning of the first story. This is my first attempt at reading a magazine format on the Kindle. Another important feature that's missing is that there's no indication of length. When I read SF magazines I like to pick the stories based on the time I have to read. I realize that page numbers would be useless -- maybe a word or sentence count?

This collection of fantasy and science fiction short stories has a mix of both original and reprints that vary in quality. “Dry Bite” by Will McIntosh is an interesting take on zombie stories, one that focuses on the survivor’s interactions with their deceased loved ones, and was such a good read. D. Thomas Minton’s “The Schrödinger War” hides the main character’s pain inside an endless loop of war, and really underlines the horror of both.

“Ragged Claws’ by Lisa Tuttle was just okay, with the full impact of the story hinging on the reveal at the end. The protagonist goes to a club and targets a group of young people, and focuses on their conversation about the mythical Colony some have migrated to. “Angelus” by Nina Allan was a much more solid story, although I found some of the details of the world confusing. Two men, once friends, meet in very different circumstances and discuss the woman that changed both their lives. Gene Wolfe’s "Suzanne Delage" totally confused me. The narrator recounts a woman he knew all his life but didn’t know until he saw her daughter, all the while meditating on the meaning of life.

“Homecoming” by Seanan Mcguire was the real standout of the bunch. I don’t want to ruin it for you, but I don’t like sports, and I LOVED this story. It’s the most original reworkings of a popular myth I’ve read in a while.

I love "Lightspeed" -- This one, not so much

Let me be the first to say that I just love "Lightspeed" magazine. I have purchased every single one, and enjoyed them all with very few exceptions.

This particular issue, well, I would say that if it's your first time reading "Lightspeed," pick another one -- any other one. They're all great. But this issue I found a little too relentlessly grim. I know I can't expect to love each and every issue ever; hell, maybe that's the only kind of stories people are writing just now. This magazine is always a terrific value for the money, and I will continue to buy every issue. Just don't get your first overall impression of the magazine from this issue.

Incidentally, I want to mention also that "Lightspeed" has consistently awesome covers. Looking forward to next month.

Fast-paced, gritting thriller - a great read

After I'd read the final version of Sacrifice, Coral Russell asked me for my thoughts. I kept her waiting on my review but I shared a summary: "Sacrifice is a fast-paced, gritty story that'll keep you guessing, gasping, and gripping your Kindle". It did. Coral had originally sent me the story in several chunks and I grew increasingly frustrated when I didn't have time to leap on the new one. I love the fast pace of thrillers and Sacrifice was no exception.

So, gritty and larger than life characters? Check. An edgy storyline that races through the book? (Obviously in a slick way, rather than an "I'm late for my bus" way.) Check. Punchy dialogue and the odd splash of humour? Check. So far so good - for me it was a clear four star suspense novel, with a heck of a lot happening and lots to get your teeth into.

There was something else though, something that didn't happen until I'd finished reading the end product. Thrilled at the shaping of the story and how Russell had developed it, I had seen this simply as a very good thriller. But it isn't.

The more time elapsed, the more I realised that it was another element of Russell's writing that had stayed with me. I had enjoyed the story but - like most books of a similar nature - I was unlikely to play it over and over. So why was Sacrifice sticking with me so strongly? I finally realised it was the amount of background information Russell had supplied: about the border, about the drug cartels, about the gangs and the grudges and the culture. Small things, little descriptions to add to the story, had stayed with me and I had begun to wonder about the non-fiction side of this book. It got me thinking, wanting to know more and willing to read more.

That earned it the final star. A book that entertains is a great find. A book that entertains and educates or at least inspires the beginning of an education is a superb one. It comes as no surprise to me that Russell was a teacher. She makes you want to learn (as I also found when I read Peace on the Peninsula). At the same time, her approach is so casual that if you really are only looking for a few hours of suspenseful reading, you'll still find it.

MYSTERY AND INTRIGUE!

Drug cartels, policemen, teachers and car salesmen --an unlikely cast of characters in this novel. The plot was rather confusing at times, but interesting enough to keep me reading to the end where the author tied everything up in a satisfying conclusion.

SACRIFICE immerses us into the edgy world of gang warfare and Mexican drug cartels where the tension and stakes run high.

Roberta, the daughter of high-level leader of the Juarez Cartel escaped punishment and death because of her father's position, but now must redeem herself for skimming money from her father. Roberta wants to make her money then get out of the business for good. Needing an unsuspicious means to smuggle the drugs, Roberta entices disenfranchised Luis, a successful car salesman who is too good at his job to be promoted to a managerial spot. Luis slowly becomes entrenched in Roberta's world as a drug runner, also hoping to be able to make enough to retire in a couple of years. Meanwhile, rival gang member and third generation bastard, Armanda de Salvo III, AKA Duke, takes care of his business, which includes tender and respectful watching over his father, grandfather and ailing great-great-grandmother. Police officer Frankie goes about investigating the murder of a gang member, which sets him on a trail to seek out a now nervous Luis, while Duke's great-great-grandmother has revealed information about Duke's birthright that sends Duke on a personal quest to seek out family and revenge.

Author Coral Russell's impossible-to-put-down thriller gets the adrenalin flowing from the start by immersing the reader into the persuasive story, impelling plot and characters that are fresh and vivid in their paradoxes; sensitive but brutal, black and white yet complex, calm but filled with tension, loyal yet corrupt. The interwoven stories intricately bring out the characters' heightened psyches and emotions, revealing tightly wound thinking in an edgy environment.

Expertly weaving together fact and fiction, Russell does not use chapters to indicate scene change, instead opting for carefully selected quotations from real-life figures to break up the narrative; to take the chaos, the danger and the thrill of the gang wars and remind us that SACRIFICE is not mere fiction. The poignant quotations come from a plethora of characters from ex-gang members to musicians, from politicians to spiritual leaders, and serve to add fuel to the content and the exhilarating pace of the unraveling plot. Among the telling quotations are:

In todays busy world, where we people are overworked and stressed. It's hard stop, think and thank for everything we are fotunate to have. "That Gratitude Attitude" Inspired me to practice gratitude on a daily basis. It takes you through day by day exercises, so we can be grateful and stop spending so much time looking at what is wrong in our lives. It is fun, challenging and worth every word read. Thank You Lin Laurie I have found incredible power within myself to pull through any situation. I have learned to BE THE LIGHT!.

An Excellent Exercise in Being Grateful

Lin Laurie has mapped out a daily routine of assessing one's life and finding ways to be grateful in all circumstances. She gives helpful exercises to complete at the end of each day. I have been starting each day with the book and find that it helps set the tone for a day of thanksgiving and in my case, rejoicing in the Lord's faithfulness.

Equal to Arena One

Overall, I was not really impressed with this book. I read Book #1 in the series which was recommended after I finished the Hunger Games series. Overall, I was pretty disappointed with the writing style. I didn't get sucked into the plot and would have liked more character development. I'm not sure if my expectations are high based on other authors that I typically read.

I'm not sure which story came first, but it did have some similarities with the Hunger Games theme. So reading the Arena books after made them seem like they were buying into the hype of the other series. I purchased Arena Two because I hate to leave a series unfinished and saw that it had better reviews, but was equally disappointed for the same reasons as with the first.

I Would Give this ZERO STARS if I Could

I read the first book in this series and I found the writing style and lack of editing to make it very hard to read. I thought the story had potential and I didn't have anything else to read at the moment so I took a chance on Arena Two. That chance was a waste of $6 and the couple of hours it took me to get through this literary nightmare. This author either needs to fire her editor or hire one because the lack of professional editing in this book is worse than the first one. In the beginning of the book for example the main character tells you the name of the little dog and then a few pages later they decide they should name the dog, and look at that it is the same name you just saw them call the dog pages before. The main character "Brooke" calls her sister (Bree) by "Brooke" and "Brooks" several times throughout the book. There are entire sentences that don't even make sense as if she wrote this book on her iPhone and the auto-correct got the best of her at times. I wondered many times if the author's first language is something other than English as she only seems to know about 250 English words and many of those she does not use properly. The repetition is awful, it goes something like this over and over again :"to his credit, Ben picked up Logan when he fell. Then when Ben tripped, to his credit Logan helped him up, then to my credit I love them both even though we just met yesterday."

Once you get past all of the awfulness of how this book is composed (who I am kidding, it is impossible to get past.) I guess you could try to enjoy the story, only it is even more far fetched and silly than the first book. When they are on the river in a boat, for some reason Brooke can see and hear boats miles away when they are around a bend but they never manage too see her boat doing things like stringing rope from bank to bank across the Hudson River as the slaverunners "close in so fast". These characters narrowly escape death by the craziest means possible nearly every page. Just as you think the action will die down and you might get to learn a little about the characters you know nothing about "all hell just broke loose", every. single. time. Brooke is impossible to like as a main character because she has no redeeming qualities. She instantly feels loyal to certain people she meets and decides they are "like a brother" after five minutes, others, also young children, she sends to their deaths without a second thought. I understand it is supposed to be a brutal post-apocalyptic world but I just don't buy it. I love this genre in general and have given many of this type of book four or five stars but this one is just so poorly written and the characters are so shallow that it is impossible to get into it and root for anyone. By the third chapter I was just rooting for it to be over.

I found the first book in this series to be terrible but I thought the story had enough potential that I would try the second one when I was bored. That was a big mistake, it was a waste of time and money and may be the first time in my life I really and truly wish I had not read a book. Please don't waste your time on this epic failure at literature.

Poorly Written but Interesting Story

Comparing this story to The Hunger Games is more than just a stretch. It's an all out split with the Hunger Games on one end of the spectrum and the Arena series on the far opposite. Sure, the premise is similar but that's it. The writing is terrible. The author uses the word "Luckily" almost every other paragraph. I guess no one ever told her what most writing classes teach: "The adverb is not your friend." There are rampant editing errors throughout, which suggests that the author either neglected to use an editor or didn't bother to thoroughly read through her work before publishing.

With all that said, the premise is interesting. Brooke and her friends are on the run from slave runners, who are determined to capture them and force them to fight each to the death. Along the way, they run into mutants, who are humans that have lost their humanity from the radiation that destroyed their souls and disfigured their bodies. Brooke's group finds a boat to take them up the Hudson River, heading toward a so-called and probably fictional Paradise, where people live happily amongst each other, safe from the threats of murder and destruction. Along the way, they will face mortal danger and not all of them will make it out alive.

Fascinating, right? Well it is, but the execution is poor. I feel like this writer needs to get herself a good editor before trying to publish the third and final book in this trilogy. But even that won't save this trilogy. It was a nice attempt, but in the rush to publish, it failed in some pretty basic ways. Sorry Ms. Rice, I hope your future endeavors are a better success.
