Great three-part novel

Be sure to understand that this is NOT a stand-alone book - it is a single novel sold in three pieces. I usually don't like it when publishers split a book that way, because it usually means they're trying to find a way to extract extra money from readers. However, that certainly isn't the case here; for now, at least, the novel is quite under-priced. (As I write this, book 1 is free and books 2 and 3 are $.99 each.) It would still be a good value if the three books (together, not individually) were priced at $6 or $7.

I typically rate lower than most readers, but I really liked this book. I'd normally rate it 4.0 to 4.5, but the great value rounds it up to a solid 5.0. The author's writing is polished and professional (unlike many writers in this genre.) The characters were well developed and likable, despite their flaws.

The author tackles some very difficult issues like sexual abuse and illness, I normally don't care for books that include such serious themes, but Bishop addresses them in a sensitive manner that worked for me. It probably helped that the abuse was treated in flashback manner, without going into lots of detail.

Despite all of the trials like throws at him, or perhaps because of them, main character Abel works to overcome them and support his sister in all ways. The other characters are great as well.

Surprisingly, I think the publisher (or perhaps Amazon) is underestimating the number of pages in the book. Here's how the pieces break down:

Abel 1: It Can't Be You - 3870 locations; Amazon says 161 pages; I say (conservatively) 258
Abel 2: Hearts In Chaos - 2223 locations; Amazon says 112 pages; I say 148
Abel 3: Shattered - 2353 locations; Amazon says 116 pages; I say 157

For the entire three-part novel:
8446 locations; Amazon says 389 pages; I conservatively estimate 563 pages.

There is no extra filler in these locations counts; they are all (except for at most 50 locations per book for contents page, etc.) pure story content.

Because the three books make up a single novel and can't be read individually, I'm commenting on and rating all three parts identically. Highly recommended.

Wonderful end to a wonderful story after so much up and downs finally they worked out with the help of unexpected characters and some of their stories might be the topic for author's new book........I hope

This was a fantastic trilogy! I hope this author doesn't stop with this series. But... maybe a little less "tears" in the next book? Loved all 3 books!

This is pretty good.

I've often wondered why the books written for technicians are, generally speaking, a lot clearer than those written for engineers. I suspect the answer is that the former are written by practitioners while the latter are written by college professors whose grasp of reality tends to be tenuous at best.

I use this book constantly when I'm interpreting horoscopes. Its main feature is a delineation of all major aspects (the geometric relationships between planets). Hamaker-Zondag's interpretations are clear, psychologically observant and non-dogmatic; there's a refreshing open-endedness here. The delineations are preceded by a helpful general discussion of aspects, with an emphasis on their elemental basis. A chapter on unaspected planets is also handy. If you want to start interpreting astrological charts, or get a deeper understanding of your own chart, this is definitely a book you can use.

A Cookbook for building Understanding

Overall, this is an excellent reference for planetary aspects and a learning guide as well for the student. Part I (nearly 1/3 of the book) has much to offer in understanding special problems such as unaspected planets and judging the importance of aspects. Additionally, much care is taken in the emphasis on understanding the basic nature of the planets.
The book did present me with a problem or two - the most obvious being the inclusion of the Inconjunct among major aspects while hiding explanation of the aspect under the heading of the Semisextile. Has the author not yet made up her mind as to its importance?

Before mentioning the content of The Nature of the Beasts, let me pause and relish the prose style. The exquisite phrasing and robust documentation are above reproach and there are narrative techniques such as foreshadowing, repetition with variation, contrast with parallels and timeless epic themes placing the work among the best. I laughed. I cried. It was not until nearly the end that I realized how heroically inclusive the title is. And the graphics are wonderful. How I longed to see each on a full page spread.

Who could have guessed so much of profound general interest could be found in the archives of a zoo?

Early on there are two liminal issues onto which I fastened: the border between natural and human, and the border between traditional and urban (including modern) societies. The first is dealt with elegantly and with great insight, tracing the perception of nature as invincible into nature as a remnant requiring the utmost in care and nurturing and probing the parallels and contrasts between the life occupying the cages and the life peering in.

The second approaches an issue that is my own obsession: call it urban infertility. No city has ever been able to survive without recruitment. The birth rate is never sufficient for survival. This has been attributed to pollution or choice in the ancient world. It has been attributed to street violence or dueling in the more recent past. It has been attributed to élan vital, more recently. That myth was demolished by Pasteur, so the blame was laid at the feet of infectious disease, which is under control so we are back with pollution or choice, where we started a couple thousand years ago. Yet urban infertility persists unabated.

I have long said, with temerity while documentation was lacking, that the city must recruit. The village generally produces plenty of children. So I have attributed the wonders of civilization – absurd architecture, pointless pageantry, deafening music, zoos and books (well there had to be some good in it) to the need of the city to proclaim that its life was somehow superior to village life. And this book points out how this recruitment campaign was documented at the great Ueno Zoo in Tokyo. Of course once the critical step from village to town has been taken, there is no logical barrier to bringing people along into empire and globalization, which is laid out swiftly and clearly from a zoological garden coign of vantage.

A wonderful read.

Disappointing anthology

Not the best by a long shot. Some fairly mediocre short stories in here along with some good stuff. One story by Vonnegut (in a 2015 anthology, years after Vonnegut's death) is really pretty crappy. I am reasonably sure that Vonnegut would never have allowed thin stinker to be published if he were alive.

There are some jewels in here like John Dufresne's 'The Cross-eyed Bair", but generally the collection seems to have been packaged more for sales than quality.

I'm disappointed that T.C. Boyle would put his name on it.

Some great stories in here, and some I wasn't crazy about. Bought it for a summer class. Book is in great shape, type is easy to read - not tiny, but not the large-size type for people with vision problems.

I really enjoyed the variety but also the overlap. The short story is really a delightful genre, but particularly challenging. These authors doing an amazing job of fitting rich characters and plots into just a few pages. I wish it never ended.

Short But Sweet

This graphic novel, if it could qualify as one, gives the very beginnings of Spartan Sarah Palmer. From her beginnings as an Orbital Drop Shock Trooper (ODST) to the Spartan IV program, Palmer was always more action than talk. This book also answers what happened to one of the Spartan III's from Halo: Reach the game. Though it was a short book I enjoyed everything it had to offer, and it would make a great gift to any Halo fan.

Great Read!

As a Halo fan, I always enjoy hearing the back stories of the characters. Sarah Palmer is the commander of a lot of Spartans, and hence, she is definitely an important character in the halo universe. This story follows her as she is drafted into the Spartan program. This book has a lot of great art, and a great story. No master chief unfortunately, but the story is here nonetheless. This is guaranteed too be a good read, and will satisfy the thirst of any Halo fan. I enjoyed it thoroughly and will most likely read it again a few times.

Sarah Palmer is probably one of my top 5 characters from the Halo Universe. This is a great read to help flesh that character out. In the book, she closely resembles her video game counterpart- something that can't always be said for other mixed-media characters.

About the Author

Elliot King, a veteran technology reporter, has been on the cutting edge of communication technology since he opened his first e-mail account in 1984. He is professor of communication at Loyola University in Maryland, founder of his school’s digital media lab, coauthor of The Online Journalist (2000), and special editor of three volumes of the Electronic Journal of Communication about journalism and the Internet.

Jeff Jarvis is an associate professor and the director of the interactive journalism program at the City University of New York's new Graduate School of Journalism. He is the author of What Would Google Do? (2009) and blogs about media and news at Buzzmachine.com.

Digital News: Where We've Been and Where We're Going

Elliot King's Free for All is easily the best survey of the trial-and-error history of digital journalism around. King makes the fits and starts of pre-internet, pre-web technology come alive again for someone like me -- who lived and worked through it all -- and will be a real eye-opener for the generation that has grown up taking the web for granted. The book makes the technology easy to grasp and its impact on journalism easy to understand. King takes you into the minds of the entrepreneurs for whom the notion that computer networks must be excellent delivery systems for news was at once obvious and elusive. We never quite figured out how to make it work back then, and we're still trying to figure it out today. This is a must read for anyone in the media business, the technology business, or any aspect of the thinking and knowing business.

Excellent, easy-to-read history of technology's impact on journalism

Elliot King has written an excellent, easy-to-read overview of how technology and journalism have intersected and impacted each other through history. Professor King leads us to current times, where the internet and journalism seem on a collision course. Yet he skillfully provides a hopeful historical context to what is happening before our eyes, especially to print media. This book will appeal to both academics (it is meticiously researched with lots of footnotes and references) and the general public who are interested in how rapidly changing technology is impacting how we receive news and what it looks like.

Making Sense of the Craziness

Elliot King does an amazing job of explaining how we have ended up in this crazy world of 24/7 information and communication. His research is impeccable and the connections he makes are insightful and enlightening. As a lay person (non-academic), I found the book quite easy to read and actually hard to put down. Now Dr. King needs to write a book telling us how to cope with information on demand every minute of every day!
