antithetical to critical inquiry
By Malachi Beale
I used this book as the primary text in TOK for two years before convincing the department to discard it. The book is an odd hodgepodge of ideas and theories, and in that regard does an adequate job of introducing students to ideas. The book also provides references to relevant readings and sources. But the book provides little depth and fails to encourage or generate critical inquiry. My department's experience of the book was that it actually discouraged critical thinking because of its "catalogue of information" style: students would merely parrot the wide but shallow range of material. We teachers put so much effort into finding relevant ancillary readings and drafting interpretive questions that we finally realized we had not need for the book at all.

Expelled from her native Florence, Catherine is betrothed to Henri, son of François I of France. In an unfamiliar realm, Catherine strives to create a role for herself through her patronage of the famous clairvoyant Nostradamus and her own innate gift as a seer. But in her fortieth year, Catherine is widowed, left alone with six young children in a kingdom torn apart by the ambitions of a treacherous nobility. Relying on her tenacity, wit, and uncanny gift for compromise, Catherine seizes power, intent on securing the throne for her sons, unaware that if she is to save France, she may have to sacrifice her ideals, her reputation, and the secret of her embattled heart.

Amazon.com Review
C.W. Gortner on The Confessions of Catherine de Medici

I found Catherine de Medici to be both a perfect subject and enormous challenge for my next work of historical fiction. Though I’d known about her for years, I soon discovered during my research how little I had truly understood her. Few queens are as notorious as this woman who ruled France during the 16th century, renowned for her ruthlessness and accused of heinous crimes, including the Massacre of St. Bartholomew. Obscured by her own dark legend, Catherine lurks in the shadows of history as the perennial black widow, weaving intrigue in her Louvre palace apartments even as outside her window, Paris lies bathed in blood.

Catherine was born in a time of deep religious conflict, when the idealism of Europe’s early Renaissance had given way to the zealous Protestant Reformation. England, Germany, and the Low Countries embraced this new faith, while imperial Spain tenaciously combated the spread of what was seen as heresy. France found itself trapped between the tenets of the old faith and innovation of the new one--and the struggle that ensued is marked by its fervor and savagery. It is also dominated by the widowed queen-mother, Catherine de Medici.

When someone lives an eventful life in a tumultuous time, there’s always more to her story than history can tell us. Catherine de Medici is a figure of lurid speculation but she had dreams and aspirations; hopes and disillusions. Yet unlike Elizabeth I, who commands our respect with her virginal splendor; or Mary of Scots, who elicits sympathy for her romantic martyrdom, Catherine has not been allowed much compassion. We forget that in the end, like all of us, she was human.

This is the flesh-and-blood Catherine de Medici readers will meet in my book: the teenage Florentine heiress sent to France to marry a prince she does not love; the determined wife enduring years in the shadow of her husband’s icy mistress; the powerful regent fighting for her country; the fierce mother with her brood of children; and the bold queen whose alliance with an enigmatic rebel plunges her into a labyrinth of passion, betrayal, and murder. You will also meet the seer Nostradamus, who shares a prophetic gift with Catherine; the haughty duke of Guise, whose ambitions could bring about France’s ruin; and Catherine’s own children--weak Francois, married to Mary of Scots yet terrified of becoming king; fervent Charles, scarred by the fears of his childhood; gallant Henri, whose courage hides a secret; deformed Hercule, frantic to prove his worth; and beautiful Margot, whose thwarted desires will wreak terrible vengeance.

Unlike the legend, Catherine’s true story is full of drama, courage, triumph and tragedy; set in a complex era of glamorous spectacle and lethal deceit, where one woman faced the conflict between faith and survival and did everything she had to, to protect those she loved.

I hope that once you read her words, you will find her as fascinating as I did. I hope you enjoy The Confessions of Catherine de Medici.

From Publishers Weekly
Catherine de Medici uses her natural and supernatural gifts to protect the French throne in Gortner's (The Last Queen) portrait of a queen willing to sacrifice happiness and reputation to fulfill her family's royal destiny. Orphan Catherine has her first vision at age 10, and three years later is betrothed to Henri d'Orleans, brother of the sickly heir to the French throne. She heads to France with a vial of poison hidden among her possessions, and after negotiating an uneasy truce with her husband's mistress, she matures into a powerful court presence, though power, she learns, comes at a price. Three of her sons become king in succession as the widow Catherine wields ever-increasing influence to keep the ambitious de Guise clan at bay and religious adversaries from murdering each other. Gortner's is not the first fictional reinterpretation of a historical villainess—Catherine's role in the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre, for instance, is recounted in a way sympathetic to her—but hers is remarkably thoughtful in its insight into an unapologetically ruthless queen. From Booklist
Gortner, author of The Last Queen (2008), fleshes out the notorious Catherine de Medici centuries after her death. Was she a victim of historical, political, and social circumstances or merely a ruthlessly ambitious power seeker? Gortner addresses these murky questions and throws in an intriguing bit of the mystical as her robustly imagined Catherine experiences prophetic visions as she charts the course of a turbulent life that took many unexpected twists and turns. During her childhood in her native Italy, she learns to make the most of every situation, a talent that stands her in good stead during her less-than-idyllic tenure as queen of France. After the death of her unfaithful husband, King Henry II, she wields the considerable authority and influence she has accumulated on behalf of her three sons, securing the throne for them, in turn, by any means necessary. Alison Weir and Philippa Gregory fans will devour this smashing fictonal biography of a complex woman whose legend has withstood the test of time. --Margaret Flanagan

(4.5) "Love is a treacherous emotion. You'll fare better without it."
By Luan Gaines
Gortner's portrait of Catherine de Medici is rich in historical detail, a view inside the world of a woman touched by the hand of fate, France awash in religious wars in the late 16th century. In spite of Catherine's reputation as "the Italian Jezebel", Gortner melds fact and fiction, myth and legend in a fascinating, provocative tale that speaks of power, governance, passion, ambition and the realm of the occult. Catherine is expelled from Florence and the shadow of the Medici line, great-granddaughter of Il Magnifico, Lorenzo de Medici, sent to France as daughter-in-law to Francois I and wife of the Duc de Orleans. Still an impressionable girl, Catherine has expectations: a husband who might show her some small affection, the privilege of bearing his heirs. For all her fanciful dreams of a new life in France, Catherine learns that reality is fraught with danger, her husband's affections freely given to another, the judgment of the French people harsh, the fatherly love of Francois her only comfort.

Superstitious since childhood, Catherine reluctantly acknowledges her gift of "sight", plagued by dreams that foretell of death and violence. In time, as Queen of France, Catherine bears six children and is widowed at forty, just as has been prophesied, her legacy forever twined with the religious wars that dominate the century. Conflict spreads throughout the realm between the Church and the heretical beliefs of French Protestants, or Huguenots, cities plagued with public burnings and murderous rampages as though the hounds of Hell have been released. Ultimately, Catherine bears the bitter fruit of her blind loyalty to her children and love for an untrustworthy man. In protecting the Valois lineage, Catherine makes critical errors in judgment, underestimating rivals and the resentments of her own children. These are bloody times, the lessons of the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre fresh and painful, Catherine mindful of the necessity for compromise, for peace.

From Florence, Italy, to the lush Loire Valley and an embattled Paris, Gortner separates myth from an abundance of fact, with a plethora of memorable historical figures, Nostradamus, the fanatical Philip II of Spain, the bitter enmity of her own daughter and the chaos of a country torn apart by religious persecution. Catherine is neither victim nor heroine, a product of her environment and heritage, cast into a fractious battle for the throne of France, overwhelmed and burdened, arrogant and foolish, lonely and driven. Given the inherent dangers of her position and the vicious wars that feed on intolerance, the reader is left to judge this woman, her pride, ambitions, betrayals and defeats, the ignominy of the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre and the misplaced affection for a man who will betray her trust. Much as he interpreted the life of Juana de Loca in The Last Queen, Gortner's Catherine de Medici is delivered from the realm of hyperbole to stand beside her powerful contemporaries in the late 16th century, Mary Queen of Scots and Elizabeth I. Luan Gaines/2010.

A softer Catherine
By Caitlin Martin
This was interesting, but not as good as I expected. It's possible my expectations were too high, but I really wanted a lot more from this book.

There were plenty of very powerful people in the 16th century who were afraid of Catherine de Medici and it's probably safe to say that there's a reason for that. As a widow with young children she preserved the throne for her sons, shepherded her daughters into advantageous marriages, and did the best she could to navigate the very dangerous waters of Catholic vs. Huguenot France. She's been described as ruthless and I'm positive she was pragmatic - the stakes of the game she was playing were too high for her to be anything else.

The author is quite obviously intent upon making Catherine de Medici a more sympathetic character by rounding out her story and telling it from her perspective. He does a good job of capturing her spirit and strength as a young woman, but as she comes into power as Queen Regent her character begins to falter. In attempting to soften her the author instead turns her into a sort of bumbling hysteric, calling on mystics and stumbling her way into various massacres.

I found this portrayal highly unlikely. Why can't I be allowed to admire her for her strength, her intelligence, her patronage of the arts, her ability to survive? Why does she have to flutter about wringing her hands for me to empathize with her? I found this aspect of the book very frustrating despite the fact that the story itself is a decent read.

Allie's Review - Hist-Fic Chick
By A. Greenwald
The Catherine de Medici most know of from historical fiction of days gone by is the infamous Dowager Queen of France who dabbled in the black arts and used her royal children as pawns on her chessboard, setting her country on a path of bloody religious discord. But C.W. Gortner has never been one to accept historical stereotypes as reality, and his latest novel proves to be no exception to his quest to reveal the human side of infamously maligned women from history.

Forced by politics to marry for Italy and not for love, Catherine de Medici is sent abroad at a young age to marry Henri, the second son of King François I of France. She had never presumed that she might one day become queen; after all, her husband is the younger son and simply fills the role of the spare in the requisite heir-and-a-spare dynastic setup. But when tragedy strikes and Henri has to step up to the plate as King, Catherine finds herself in a new position at court. However, Queen of France as she may be, Catherine would never be Queen of Henri's heart. That position was already occupied by his mistress the chilly Diane de Poitiers. The Mrs. Robinson of the 16th Century, Diane was a cougar who wasn't afraid to show her claws, often at Catherine's expense.

Catherine actually holds more queenly powers as a widow after her husband's death, no longer queen in name but queen in the eyes of the people, as regent to her young sons who reign consecutively. With this newfound power, she sets to righting the wrongs her powerful enemies at court had once wrought on the nation, and to securing peace between the Catholics and Huguenots. Gortner addresses the rumors that give Catherine the reputation of power-seeking sorceress, but with an eye for characterizing Catherine as a human and never as one who sought to wreak havoc between the two faiths. Many historians are of the belief that were it not for Catherine de Medici, the French monarchy would have fallen two hundred years before the Revolution ever took place, and Gortner portrays Catherine from this same perspective. Strong, intelligent, and strategically minded, Catherine is a force to be reckoned with. There are definitely some "confessions" to be revealed in this book; some unexpected twists you won't find in the history books that add an impassioned spark to this already blazing storyline!

I really love the way Gortner tells his stories from the first person perspective, something he does incredibly well. His other historical fiction novel, The Last Queen is one of my favorites and I find myself constantly recommending it to people. Gortner's inherent writerly voice consistently shines through in his novels, yet the two protagonists he profiles in both have inimitable voices of their own, formulated with the artistry of a master at his craft.

The Confessions of Catherine de Medici hits stores May 25th. C.W. Gortner's next novel focuses on another so-called ruthless queen: Isabel of Castile, and I cannot wait to read it!

Finalist! 2000 Pulitzer Prize in Drama

Peddling stolen refrigerators in the feeble hope of making enough money to open a video store, King Hedley, a man whose self worth is built on self delusion, is scraping in the dirt of an urban backyard trying to plant seeds where nothing will grow. Getting, spending, killing and dying in a world where getting is hard and killing is commonplace are threads woven into this 1980's installment in the author's renowned cycle of plays about the black experience in America. Drawing on characters established in Seven Guitars, King Hedley II shows the shadows of the past reaching into the present as King seeks retribution for a lie perpetrated by his mother regarding the identity of his father.

Torre David: Informal Vertical CommunitiesFrom Zurich, Eth/ Baan, Iwan (PHT)/ Brillembourg, Alfredo (CON)/ Klumponer, Hubert (CON)

Torre David is an incomplete skyscraper in the center of the Venezuelan capital Caracas that has been occupied and reconstructed by local residents. Work on the building, named after the financial investor David Brillembourg, who died in 1993, was suspended during the Venezuelan financial crisis of 1994. After the office tower-- the third highest in Venezuela--had stood empty for many years, it was taken over by the local population in 2008. The occupants made the building their own with improvisation and skill--it is a "vertical favela," now containing not just housing but also other everyday facilities such as an improvised doctor's office, shops, and more. Photographer Iwan Baan has documented Torre David and its occupants, creating a portrait that captures the contradictions of the place while at the same time revealing urban structures that have emerged dynamically and without planning. Alfredo Brillembou rg was born in New York in 1961. In 1993 he founded Urban-Think Tank in Caracas, Venezuela. Since May 2010, Brillembourg holds a chair in architecture and urban design at the Swiss Institute of Technology, Zürich. Hubert Klumpne r was born in Salzburg in 1965. In 1998 he joined Alfredo Brillembourg as director of Urban-Think Tank in Caracas. Since 2010, Klumpner holds a chair in architecture and urban design at the Swiss Institute of Technology, Zürich. Iwan Baan , born in Alkmaar, Netherlands, in 1975, is an architecture and documentary photographer. His photographs feature regularly in such journals as Domus, A+U, The New Yorker, The New York Times, and others.

A very rich approach to a modern phenomena.
By onon77
I was expecting a Photo book with some information on the circumstances that let a building like this to happen.
Instead I a detailed report about the building, the city, similar structures and the whole architectural concept of informal living.

The paper is not a fancy glossy one, so if you're like i was, expecting a book of nice photos you might go a little disappointed by the print. Otherwise there are some really nice pictures in it.

I have only browse through the book, and I'm going to give a detailed read later, but it seems to develop a lot in the current situation of this building and in city planning and re-thinking as well.

I recommend it more from an architectural/urbanist view then from an art/photo one.

A great read for all planner nerds!

Incredible narratives, photos, ideas, and a very good explanation of how the Torre David came to be, and what it might become. If you watch Homeland, this is the building that plays a role in season three. I stayed up almost all night reading this book. Really one of the most interesting books I've read in years.

Braddock's Defeat: The Battle of the Monongahela and the Road to Revolution, by David L. Preston

On July 9, 1755, British and colonial troops under the command of General Edward Braddock suffered a crushing defeat to French and Native American enemy forces in Ohio Country. Known as the Battle of the Monongahela, the loss altered the trajectory of the Seven Years' War in America, escalating the fighting and shifting the balance of power. An unprecedented rout of a modern and powerful British army by a predominantly Indian force, Monongahela shocked the colonial world - and planted the first seeds of an independent American consciousness. The culmination of a failed attempt to capture Fort Duquesne from the French, Braddock's Defeat was a pivotal moment in American and world history. While the defeat is often blamed on blundering and arrogance on the part of General Braddock - who was wounded in battle and died the next day - David Preston's gripping new work argues that such a claim diminishes the victory that Indian and French forces won by their superior discipline and leadership. In fact the French Canadian officer Captain Beaujeu had greater tactical skill, reconnaissance, and execution, and his Indian allies were the most effective and disciplined troops on the field. Preston also explores the long shadow cast by Braddock's defeat over the 18th century and the American Revolution two decades later. The campaign had been an awakening to empire for many British Americans, spawning ideas of American identity and anticipating many of the political and social divisions that would erupt with the outbreak of the revolution. Braddock's Defeat was the defining generational experience for many British and American officers, including Thomas Gage, Horatio Gates, and, perhaps most significantly, George Washington. A rich battle history driven by a gripping narrative and an abundance of new evidence, Braddock's Defeat presents the fullest account yet of this defining moment in early American history.

A New Definitive Study of an Iconic Battle that Helped to Shape the Nation
By richard w.
Prof. Preston has written a superb account of this iconic battle that epitomized the tactical differences as between the French Canadian - Indian forces (until Montcalm changed them) and Britain's traditional, Europe-derived massed infantry and volley fire. This is a fine "update" to the work of Kopperman, and may well be the definitive account for our times. Preston has found some important new sources, including a speech by an Iroquois warrior that sheds some light on one of Preston's main points: the Indian allies of New France had their own agenda(s), and allied with the French when that offered material and enduring rewards. This warrior also explained why some traditional Indian allies of the Brits were not so eager to support Braddock's "invasion" of the over-the-mountains territory that the Indians believed (with some obvious reasons) was their homeland: young George Washington, after his contacts with the French at the forks of the Ohio failed to consult with these Indian allies. This played into the widespread suspicion among the Indians that the French and the British had an overarching goal of eliminating them (the Indians) even while fighting each other for primacy.

Preston also dispels the old conventional wisdom of Braddock's generalship as being overly strict, hidebound, reflexive and narrowly confined by European traditions. Instead, Preston shows how, at several times, Braddock showed himself to be a "soldier's general," even holding the American colonial members of his expedition to a little lower standard of military conduct. He did not, however, neglect to institute extensive measures for march security, even with very few Indian scouts available. And Braddock never uttered the derogatory words about and to Indians that others attributed to him after he died in battle. But this isn't mere revisionism for its own sake; Preston's scholarship is highly impressive. His work is extensively noted, and his bibliography is extensive.

Preston spends most of this work narrating the history of the march, showing its extreme difficulties, which Preston has personally confirmed on the ground by walking portions of Braddock's Road that still exist, and by paddling down the rivers. This all highlights how radical this attempt was to project military power into the American heartland. Preston also hints at the question whether march fatigue and loss of sleep contributed to the performance of the troops when attacked. However, he astutely points out that the British troops stood and fought for some 3 hours a virtually invisible enemy who had assumed an ambush formation the length of the British line of march. This does not suggest undisciplined, panicked, incompetent soldiery.

The real story of the Monongahela, Preston shows, was the victory of the French and Indians due to their superior woodlands tactics. Preston corrects the traditional record that the French commander, Beaujeau, won over the Indian allies only at the last minute with a speech full of bravado and challenge. Instead, the Indians, who came from many tribes and from all over the modern US Midwest to the Atlantic lands, held their own council at least one day before the battle. They agreed to stand with the French, and brought numbers to raise the combined French & Indian force to about 950 fighters, over 2/3rds od whom were Indians, and it turned out the battle was mostly an Indian victory.

Preston goes on to provide some thought-provoking conclusions, and adds several highly useful appendices, including the two side's respective orders of battle, the casualty lists, the Iroquois' hitherto undiscovered speech, an account from the French side, etc.

This book is well-written in clear, concise prose that flows without distractions that limit the conveyance of information. It is the best book I have read on the subject by quite a margin, and is likely to stand as the definitive account of this battle for a long time. I recommend this for anyone interested in the American Frontier, our military and historical heritage, and as a vignette of what war fighting was like in America before there were roads, railroads, etc. This book deserves its 5 stars.

Braddock's Defeat
By Capn Jim
This is an outstanding history book. On a par with those written by David McCullough who has won the Pulitzer Prize twice. Meticulously researched, but more importantly, eminently readable. I could not put it aside for even a day. Highly recommended for anyone remotely interested in the foundation of the United States.

Great historical read.
By Mark L. Richards
This book reflects brilliant research and meticulous attention to detail. I was fascinated by the the implications of the battle on the future of American history. I have visited many of the landmarks noted in the book and always wondered how Braddock's army managed to build the road to transport the troops and supplies in that primeval wilderness. Many kudos to the author. This truly was the American Teutoburg.

Not Impressed
By Kimberly L Mueller
I was not impressed with this textbook despite its backing of the NAEYC. As an example, in one of the chapters it tells the reader to exhaust all discipline resources BEFORE involving the parents. This makes very little sense in the real world as often parents are aware of issues that may contribute to behavioral problems. Notifying the parents last also serves to alienate the parents rather than involve them in the educational process. This is just one example of many contained in the text that are too easy to misinterpret or too poorly written to serve as valuable. We used this text for a child guidance class at a university just one quarter before tossing it out.

a beginners book
By happybride
the book isn't bad for a first book into education. it gives you insight to a lot of general situations you will encounter and need to prepare for.

however, it doesn't tell you how to deal with bad or mis behavior. it basically says that all bad behavior is the teachers fault. in addition to the fact that children mis behave when they aren't fed/sleeping at night/safe, etc. i can understand that it's teaching a future teacher to handle everything independently, and that everything is in the teachers control... but... it's not. it's too idealistic in my opinion. the fact is that some students are out of a teachers control, not all administration in a school actually helps (some do the opposite), and then it says to contact all these professionals before the parents. nuts. in my opinion, teachers should try to help all children, but realize that there are some that slip through the cracks. it's also not always useful to talk to administration. they can make life more difficult or shoot you down for even considering helping the kids. additionally, contacting a professional prior to the parent and/or administration can lead to teacher problems.

involve parents first. for both the good and the bad.

as far as misbehaving students, at least it tells you that you'll get frustrated and act inappropriately at times. Teachers are still humans, not robots yet... but it still says it in a condescending manner. it tells you the reasons students misbehave, but doesn't provide solutions for it.

all in all, it's good for a beginner. not for an experienced educator.

From School Library Journal
Grade 9 Up–This excellent resource is divided into three parts: Biography, Works A-Z, and Related People, Places, and Topics. The first and shortest section provides a summary of Steinbecks birth, early childhood, education, and career. The bulk of the book offers descriptions of all of his works–published and unpublished. Many of these entries include background information, critical summaries, discussions of the works early reception and contemporary perspectives, chapter-by-chapter synopses, information on film adaptations, and further-reading suggestions. Entries in the final section run the gamut from notes on the writers relatives and friends to the name of his high school yearbook. Appendixes include a chronology; chronological, alphabetical, and categorized bibliographies of Steinbecks works; a bibliography of secondary sources; and more. Black-and-white photos of the man and the people and places in his life and works and a few film stills are scattered throughout. A terrific choice for literature students.–Pat Bender, The Shipley School, Bryn Mawr, PA

From Booklist
The intent of this volume is to provide a "comprehensive review of Steinbeck's life and an examination of his work." The book is divided into four parts. Part 1 provides a biography of Steinbeck, with a nice overview of his life, including details about how his family came to live in California. Part 2 contains information about Steinbeck's works, including novels, essays, articles, and screenplays. Part 3 has information about people, places, and topics related to Steinbeck's works or life. Part 4 consists of appendixes. Dispersed throughout parts 1 through 3 are black-and-white photographs of the author and movie stills.

In part 2, "Works A-Z," entries vary in length from a partial page for magazine articles to several pages for major novels. Entries for works such as The Grapes of Wrath and Of Mice and Men contain sections on early criticism and contemporary perspectives as well as a detailed synopsis and descriptions of characters. There is also information on film versions. Many entries contain a "Further Reading" list for additional research. Part 3 is also arranged alphabetically, with entries on family members, filmmakers, fellow writers, and others as well as on topics such as Academy Awards, Farm Security Administration, and Monterey, California. Entries are generally short, although a few longer entries discuss important themes, such as Politics and Steinbeck's fiction.

One of the appendixes is a chronology of Steinbeck's life. Another one contains selected Steinbeck awards and honors with the year and the name of the award. A third contains a listing by year of Steinbeck in film, television, and theater. This is followed by chronological and alphabetical listings of Steinbeck's works and a bibliography of important secondary sources.

This book is suitable for public libraries, high-school libraries, and academic institutions serving an undergraduate population. It is an excellent general resource for everything Steinbeck. Jennifer Dawson

In depth coverage
By Joyce M. Tener
I have a comprehensive study of this author with this book. More than I had imagined. I did read the entries appropriate for my project e.g. East Of Eden and biographical information. While concise I feel I am prepared for the occasion for which I ordered the book and enjoyed the read. From the list of other books by the same author I have selected a few more to read and think this book will help me enjoy those reads as well. Perhaps scholarly but not snooty and incomprehensible.

Great Resource Material
By Richard R. Hays
As a retired English educator, I ordered this book for our High School Freshman granddaughter who had chosen to write a research paper about Steinbeck. This book answered all her queries and gave her a depth of material from which to write her paper. She was delighted when I gave it to her. Her smile and hug was all that I needed. Apparently, the book was useful as she received an "A" on her paper.
